Black mould linked to thousands of baby hospital admissionsBBC Panorama
Transcript
00:005-year-old Isaiah is asthmatic. Doctors have raised concerns about his exposure to black
00:06mould in the rented Brighton flat he shares with his mum Sinead.
00:09This is the toilet. Oh wow, that's a lot of mould.
00:14When Sinead moved in five years ago, the flat seemed to be in good condition. But within
00:19two weeks, the mould started to appear.
00:21So this is where it started, all on this front door.
00:26And over the next two years, it kept growing, all over the walls and even onto the beds
00:30and furniture.
00:34By 2023, Isaiah's health had deteriorated. Sinead is feeling frustrated. She has made
00:40repeated complaints to her landlord and also Brighton & Hove City Council, who are responsible
00:45for ensuring local landlords maintain housing standards.
00:48I'm a mother, I work, I have to take him to school.
00:52Sinead doesn't want to move Isaiah from his school and she can't find anywhere else
00:56nearby she can afford to rent.
00:58Last summer, the landlord arranged for a professional clean. It looks better, but you can still
01:02see the mould faintly visible underneath.
01:05Her landlord told the BBC they accept there is a problem with condensation, but they say
01:09the continuing mould issues are due to neglect by Sinead. Sinead disputes this.
01:15It's a lot to deal with on a day-to-day basis when it just keeps on coming back.
01:19Brighton & Hove City Council said the issues it has the legal power to enforce have now
01:24been addressed by the landlord.
01:26The council added that it will continue to support Sinead in resolving any further disrepair
01:30issues.
