00:00The Al Qusais landfill may soon become a source of electrical power for the city of Dubai.
00:16Green energy solutions and Dubai municipality are harnessing the power of the natural gas,
00:22produced by the 5,000 tons of solid waste that is dumped at the site every day.
00:27Al Qusais is an active landfill site that's collecting over 5,000 tons of municipal solid
00:33waste per day. Green energy solutions and sustainability designed the landfill site
00:39so that the site can remain active for years to come and collect the gas and optimize the
00:45gas production and produce power from this gas in the form of the one megawatt GenBacker
00:52engine that's been installed.
00:54Pipes bored vertically and horizontally move natural gas out of the landfill where methane
01:00is burned off to produce electricity.
01:03You can see the landfill behind me. This landfill is 40 meters in height. It's been in operation
01:10over 20 years and we've installed over 20 kilometers of pipe to collect the gas and
01:16bring it through the gas chambers. There are 12 collection chambers into the main pipes.
01:22They go through the chillers to cool the gas down, through the flare, which is flaring
01:286,000 cubic meters an hour, and it's burning off the methane fully. So you're only releasing
01:35CO2. The portion of the gas, methane, is going to the gas engine to produce one megawatt
01:42of electricity.
01:43The entire site uses the power it is harnessing to run its daily operations. From laptops
01:49to the air conditioners, everything on site runs on electricity generated by landfill
01:55gas and all stages of power production are carefully monitored according to international
02:00standards.
02:01The whole site at Al Qusais landfill is powered with the landfill gas. The site offices, the
02:08Dubai Municipality scale house and their offices and green energy offices, as well as the flaring
02:14equipment. Any electrical use is provided from this engine and that engine is run with
02:21the landfill gas. We have easily 20 years of power production that we can get.
02:28The landfill itself is capable of producing 12 megawatts of electricity and this project
02:35is in the development stages and it will be hopefully commissioned within the next year
02:43to 18 months.
02:45The project will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to about 250,000
02:52tons of carbon dioxide and aims to generate 20 megawatts of power by 2020. The city of
03:00Dubai's future electricity may just be waiting in a giant pile of trash.
