00:00Well hinting but pretty strong measures in terms of the response from the
00:05Canadian Prime Minister, the outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau saying
00:09that these are unjustified unacceptable measures from the United States and the
00:13President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, both leaders here
00:17in Paris in the Grand Palais for the AI Action Summit, she has been saying also
00:22that these will not go without a response, that there will be strong and
00:26proportionate measures in response being deployed by the European Union.
00:31There has been a lot of reaction that really seems to be the position of
00:35Western allies in Europe and for example Canada as well. Every day almost since he
00:41retook office on the 20th of January Donald Trump has been announcing sudden
00:45measures, unpredictable measures and Europe has been having to react
00:50almost on a daily basis to the constant stream of news which is upsetting
00:55regular patterns for example that we've seen established in Europe before. This
01:00news that's been coming out of the Trump administration.
01:04US Vice President J.D. Vance has delivered his keynote speech at that
01:09artificial intelligence conference against this backdrop of these trade
01:15tensions. What did he have to say?
01:20Well he said quote excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a
01:25transformative sector just as it's taking off. He said AI systems developed
01:29in America will be free from ideological bias. He went on to say he does not want
01:34to see AI being used by authoritarian states for censorship. He thinks it
01:39should be open, big tech, little tech. Really though he was reigning against the
01:44excessive regulatory framework in his opinion that he thinks for example the
01:48European Union will want to impose on artificial intelligence. He was speaking
01:53here a little bit earlier and we can listen in now to what he had to say.
01:59We believe that excessive regulation of the AI sector could kill a transformative
02:04industry just as it's taking off and we'll make every effort to encourage
02:09pro-growth AI policies. We feel very strongly that AI must remain free
02:14from ideological bias and that American AI will not be co-opted into a tool for
02:19authoritarian censorship.
02:24Yes we've seen that comment there from JD Vance. He was here at the AI summit
02:28and then after that he has been holding a working lunch with Emmanuel Macron,
02:32chance to discuss the Middle East, chance to discuss the war in Ukraine and other
02:36issues outside the world of artificial intelligence. Many other leaders here, a
02:41lot of them speaking about AI, but as you touched on in your first question Jamie
02:45of course there's always geopolitics and so aside from the AI they are also
02:49discussing those trade tensions resulting in the measures being
02:53announced by Donald Trump.
