00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News update for Wednesday, August 27. Here are the top
00:09stories at this hour. The skies over the Gaza Strip were calm Wednesday
00:13as a long-term ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinians took hold after 50 days of
00:18deadly violence. Millions in and around the war-torn enclave enjoyed a welcome night of
00:23peace during which there were no strikes on Gaza, nor Palestinian rockets fired at Israel.
00:28At least 2,143 Palestinians were killed during the attacks, the majority being civilians.
00:35An Emirati woman is safe and sound after a harrowing highway incident in Ras al-Khaimah.
00:40Traffic police saved the life of the 22-year-old woman, whose cruise control failed while she
00:44was driving her sports utility vehicle at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour on Sheikh
00:49Mohammed bin Zayed Road. An American man believed to have been killed
00:53in Syria was there to fight alongside an extremist militant group, most likely ISIL.
00:58Investigators were aware that Douglas MacArthur McCain was in the country to fight with the
01:02militant group, but they did not yet have his body and were still trying to verify information
01:07about his death, an official said. India's top court has said that lawmakers
01:12with criminal backgrounds should not serve in government, but added it could not disqualify
01:16such MPs from any cabinet. The court ruled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should be
01:21left to choose his own cabinet, but said it hoped it would take into account public
01:24expectations and India's democratic values. In sport, Manchester United's early season
01:30problems were compounded by a 4-0 loss to third-tier Milton Keane Dons in the League
01:34Cup last night. The humiliation left new manager Louis van Gaal still looking for his first
01:40win. Organizers of Lady Gaga's Middle East debut
01:43concert in Dubai have promised a cool venue at Maidan on September 10. The promoters said
01:48An innovative cooling system will ensure fans will be provided with 100 industrial
01:53coolers. Cool gusts will be propelled more than 20 meters into the air by jet diffusers,
01:58which will be located throughout the Maidan grandstand, said organizers.
02:02And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 39 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:06to 32 degrees at night. That's all for now. Thank you for watching.
