00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Monday, December the 1st. Here are the
00:09top stories at this hour.
00:12The UAE is all dressed up for the 43rd National Day tomorrow. A series of events from parades
00:17to concerts will be part of the celebrations with buildings draped in national flags. Weather
00:22forecasters said the country is in for fair weather for those planning to go out on picnics.
00:28An investigation into corruption in the Iraqi army has revealed that there were 50,000
00:33false names on its payroll. Known in the military as ghost soldiers, they either did not exist
00:38or no longer reported for duty. However, their salaries were still paid. It is thought that
00:43the salaries were siphoned off by corrupt officers.
00:47Thousands of pro-democracy activists forced the temporary closure of the Hong Kong government's
00:51headquarters today after they clashed with police outside, defying orders to retreat
00:56after more than two months of sustained protests. Chaos erupted as commuters made their way
01:01to work with hundreds of protesters surrounding Admiralty Centre, which houses offices and
01:06retail outlets. Oil tumbled to new multi-year lows in Asia, extending a sharp sell-off last
01:12week in response to OPEC's decision to maintain output despite a supply glut and plunging
01:17prices. Brent Crude touched $67.90 earlier today, its lowest since February 2010.
01:26Tottenham Hotspur came from a goal down to beat Everton 2-1 with goals, moving Spurs
01:31up to seventh in the Premier League yesterday. Earlier in the evening, Manchester City looked
01:36in fine touch as they leapfrogged Southampton to second place in the standings with a 3-0
01:41win. Bollywood actress Gauhar Khan was slapped by a member of the audience while she was
01:46filming the grand finale of India's Raw Star, a musical reality show, at Film City
01:51in Mumbai on November 30. Khan, the show's host, was attacked and threatened by Mohammed
01:56Aqil Malik because he objected to her short dress. Malik was handed over to the police.
02:02And finally, weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 26 degrees Celsius, dropping
