00:09Here are the top stories at this hour.
00:12The head of Al-Azhar, Sunni Islam's most prestigious seat of learning, called for education reform
00:17in Muslim countries in an effort to contain the spread of religious extremism.
00:22Speaking at a counter-terrorism forum in Mecca, Al-Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb linked
00:28extremism to bad interpretations of the Quran and the Sunnah.
00:32The teaching is of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
00:34Al-Tayeb said there has been a historical accumulation of excessive trends that have
00:38led some people to embrace a misguided form of Islam.
00:43A day after a massive fire, tenants were seen entering the Torch Tower to either pick up
00:47their belongings from apartments damaged by the blaze or to pick up their lives where
00:51they left off.
00:53Tenants living on floors between the 6th and 30th floor have safely returned to their homes
00:58since their apartments were not affected by the fire.
01:00For those whose homes were damaged, place was made for them to stay on the 97th floor
01:05of Princess Tower, the building across from the Torch.
01:09Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced a national security crackdown that
01:14could deny welfare payments to people seen as potential threats, strip the passports
01:18of those with dual nationality and curb travel overseas.
01:22Abbott unveiled the measures in the wake of a hostage siege in a Sydney cafe that left
01:26three dead in December.
01:28He said some personal freedoms would have to be curtailed to fight a rapidly growing
01:32threat from radical groups such as Daesh.
01:36In cricket, Maureen Ali scored 128 and took two wickets as England hauled their Cricket
01:41World Cup campaign back onto the rails after two demoralising losses with a 119-run win
01:47over Scotland today.
01:50And in the Oscars, the Best Picture award went to Birdman, Julianne Moore got the Oscar
01:55for the Best Actress for Still Alice, and the Best Actor Oscar went to Eddie Redmayne
01:59for The Theory of Everything.
