00:00I guess my first makeup memory is when I was a child really, my mom, she's really beautiful
00:17with or without makeup, but she was definitely to me a beauty queen.
00:21She would curl her hair, wear a good amount of makeup, and I always saw my mom as that
00:28feminine figure, and so I always admired that, but it wasn't really until I got into punk
00:33rock music in my early teens that I started exploring makeup, and I guess it was just
00:37more of a form of self-expression.
00:39It wasn't so much about beauty.
00:42If I wore eyeliner, it was more dramatic or whatever, and it wasn't considered pretty.
00:46After the success of the television shows and everything, I think that was the initial
00:50interest that Sephora saw in me.
00:52They were like, who's this girl, and she's always wearing red lipstick, and we should
00:55talk to her, and then when we finally met, it just became a really great collaboration.
01:02I tend to make fun of my style, because I think you should.
01:06I think people take themselves way too seriously, and for me, it's all about having fun, and
01:10I think that's probably why I get along really good with kids, because kids look at me like
01:14a cartoon character, where I think adults tend to be more frightened of me, like, oh,
01:18she wears all black, or look at her crazy makeup and her big shoes, and for me, I don't
01:23know, I think it's fun to be able to play with these things, whether it's fashion or
01:26makeup or hairstyles and things.
01:32A lot of people ask me the question of how does it feel to transition from tattooing
01:36to makeup, but I don't really see it as a transition, because I still do tattoos.
01:39I'm also not just a tattoo artist.
01:41I play music, I draw, I paint, I want to do everything, so I think makeup is just one
01:46more artistic expression and another outlet that I have.
01:50I'm hoping that being in the public eye, in some way, it inspires girls and guys, too,
01:56to really take reins and express themselves and follow their artistic dreams, because
02:04if I can do it, somebody who didn't even graduate high school, then you can do it.
02:12I pride myself in being creatively involved in the entire process, everything from the
02:16idea, which is birthed in my mind, and then I usually draw it out, to the shade names,
02:22to the package design, every single lettering, all the graphic, the artwork, and the inspirations
02:27behind the collections and stuff.
02:30I do all of that.
02:31I think for some people, it would probably be difficult to work with me, because I'm
02:36not one of those celebrities who just put their name on something and then they're like,
02:40let me just get a paycheck.
02:41For me, it's like, hey, if this is off, I micromanage things, but it's because I love it.
02:47And you're right, I think that element of my makeup line, I'm proud to say that it stands
02:53out amongst others, because it's not just a product, it's a love story.
03:00I don't feel the pressure from the outside world when it comes to producing anything.
03:04It's mainly, I'm my own biggest critic, so I think sometimes I tend to get in my own
03:09way, because I'm like, oh, well, it needs to be perfect.
03:11But at the end of the day, I think there's something to be said, something that's done
03:14with quality, and there's longevity in it, and that's what I'm interested in.
03:18I don't care about seasons or what's in trend, because I want all of my pieces to be on trend
03:24all the time.
03:27I think one attribute that I love about my makeup line is that there is that versatility.
03:32For example, you take those eyeshadow palettes that we were playing with earlier, when I
03:35create those, I look at it as, I put myself in the position of two people.
03:41I put myself, and I go, okay, cool, I can create all this dramatic, crazy looks.
03:45And then I put myself in the position of my mom, who does not dress like me.
03:50She's quite conservative.
03:51Her approach, using the same tools, would be much different, and I think that that's
03:55the beauty of makeup, is that you can take a wild color and wear it in a way that it's
03:59not so wild, or it's more sophisticated, or you can do it in a crazy, more expressionistic
04:05kind of way.
04:09I've been so excited about finally launching Kat Von D Beauty here.
04:13I've noticed, just on Instagram alone, I see these beautiful posts.
04:18The women of the Middle East are not afraid of a bold eye, and I love that, because that's
04:23how I feel about makeup in general.
04:26So I think that they're going to definitely be excited to try out, of course, all the
04:31eye products, the eyeliners, and things like that, but I think the long wear in the foundation
04:34and in the lip colors, I think they're going to absolutely love it, especially because
04:38of the heat, you know?
