00:00It's actually a long journey, it's 25 years.
00:14To me as a costume designer, I started 25 years ago and it was all of 23 years to work
00:19in a boutique and just love Indian movies and I thought that if I have to make a name
00:25why don't I get some fashion and styling into movies.
00:29My work got really popular and I launched my own label and it's been what, 10 years?
00:35This year is actually 25 years to costume design and 10 years to my label.
00:42Years ago in the 90s when Bollywood was changing, Indian movies were changing, I introduced
00:48a lot of western-ish silhouettes in Indian wear which became really famous with the youngsters
00:53all over the world.
00:54Because when it was cool it was Manish Malhotra who did the costumes, right?
00:57The weddings and everything and I think that, so weddings is where Indians spend, wedding
01:07is where, which is all about Indian couture.
01:10I love opulent clothes, I love opulence, I love grandeur and to me, I mean if you ask
01:15me that would you prefer couture or two-prep, I would prefer couture.
01:19For me, fashion is not pretentious, fashion is something to be enjoyed, it's style more
01:30than fashion, it's something that you are, you like to do, your honesty towards that
01:36is something that is most important to me and to me I would never pretend to be or do
01:42anything that's not organically me.
01:44As a person, I want to be relevant, I want to connect to the audience out there, I don't
01:49want to make garments which people just look at and say, wow, very nice but it's not me.
01:53To me the relativity is very important, otherwise it's just in the dark, you're sitting at home,
01:58you're thinking, wow, you're making such a creative thing while no one's even understanding
02:01it.
02:02I don't look at myself as this, oh my god, what a big artist, what a big genius, what
02:05a big all of that, no.
02:06I look at myself as somebody who loves to do what he does and I think when people wear
02:12my clothes and feel good about it is something that I've achieved and that's what gives me happiness.
