00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Thursday, February the 4th. Here are the
00:10top stories at this hour.
00:12Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has said he will turn himself over to British police
00:17on Friday if a UN panel rules he has not been arbitrarily detained. He has spent more than
00:23three years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
00:26Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden over
00:31rape allegations, charges he has denied. Ecuador has granted him asylum, but he faces immediate
00:38arrest if he steps onto British soil. Police have been posted around the clock outside
00:44its doors at a cost of millions of pounds.
00:47International aid to the victims of Syria's five-year war, including the millions forced
00:52to flee their homes, has persistently fallen short. However, organisers of the annual Syria
00:58pledging conference hope for greater generosity this time around, despite a record request
01:04of close to $9 billion for 2016. The expectations are partly based on the reframing of the aid
01:11debate over the past year, following the chaotic migration of hundreds of thousands of desperate
01:17Syrians to Europe.
01:19Coach Darren Lehmann has been cleared to join Australia's test team in New Zealand after
01:24suffering from deep vein thrombosis. Lehmann has been sidelined since January 23, after
01:30he was admitted to a Sydney hospital with a swollen calf. Battling coach Michael DiVenuto
01:36replaced him for Australia's 2020 series against India and the one-day international tour of
01:42New Zealand, which started in Auckland on Wednesday. All the games have been lost.
01:49Actress Cate del Castillo has filed a petition seeking an injunction against any arrest related
01:55to Mexico's investigation of her relationship with detained drug lord Joaquin El Chapo Guzman.
02:02Del Castillo arranged a meeting between the drug boss and actor Sean Penn in October.
02:08Guzman was arrested in a raid in January.
02:11And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 23 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:17to 17 degrees at night. That's all for now. Thanks for watching. A reminder that our next
02:22bulletin will be on Sunday. But as always, you can get the latest news on gulfnews.com.
