00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Thursday, June 23. Here are the top stories
00:07at this hour.
00:08Millions of Britons began voting in a bitterly fought, knife-edge referendum that could tear
00:13up the island nation's EU membership and spark the greatest emergency of the bloc's
00:1860-year history.
00:19A record 46.5 million voters were registered to decide Britain's future in the 28-nation
00:25European Union.
00:26And one of the last opinion polls before the vote, Remain took a lead with 48%, notably
00:30ahead of Leave on 42%. The rest were undecided.
00:35Rebellious Democrats staged an extraordinary round-the-clock sit-in on the House floor
00:40to demand votes on gun control bills, shouting down Speaker Paul Ryan when he attempted to
00:45restore order as their protest stretched into the night.
00:48The stunning and unruly scene was broadcast live to the world from Democrats' cell phones,
00:53feeds picked up by C-SPAN after Republicans shut down the network's cameras.
00:59Solar Impulse 2, the first solar-powered plane circumnavigating the world, has landed in
01:04Spain's southern Seville airport. This is a historic achievement as the voyage marked
01:08the first solo transatlantic crossing in a solar-powered plane.
01:12The pilot, Bertrand Pickard, had little sleep and his 70-hour flight often encountered turbulence.
01:19A key chapter of rock and roll history could be rewritten by a jury that began deliberating
01:25over whether Led Zeppelin ripped off a riff for its epic Stairway to Heaven. Jurors deliberated
01:30for several hours but did not reach a verdict. They are scheduled to resume today.
01:36And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 46 degrees Celsius, dropping
01:41to 29 degrees at night.
01:43That's all for now. Thanks for watching. A reminder that our next news bulletin will
01:47be on Sunday. But as always, you can get the latest news on gulfnews.com.
