00:00Around 700 Dubai residents flocked to the Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary on Friday morning
00:11to celebrate the World Environment Day.
00:14Emirates Marine Environmental Group, Dubai Municipality, Naqil and Burj Al Arab Rehab
00:19Center organized a special event in the Gantut Reserve to raise awareness about human impact
00:25on the marine and coastal environment.
00:27The main highlights of the event is the release of rescued sea turtles back into the ocean.
00:32The turtle is very important.
00:33We are doing a big project.
00:34I am also the general manager of WWF and we are tagging these turtles to make sure these
00:41turtles are in the Gulf and they are making the pellets with the jellyfish because they
00:46are eating jellyfish and make the pellets and that's why we care about them.
00:50Also they are part of the whole marine life.
00:53You know it's a big challenge because we need understanding, you know people to understand
00:58about these species, you know how we care about them and why we care about it.
01:02You know like the eggs, it's not allowed to touch the eggs before people eating the eggs
01:06and now it's stopped.
01:07You know like six months in the jail if somebody touched these eggs or the turtle.
01:12This is why this awareness is coming and everybody you know about it.
01:16I think we should encourage them as much as possible.
01:18I think the more awareness there is out there, the fact that we have these amazing beaches
01:23with these amazing turtles.
01:25These are Hawksbill turtles.
01:26They are not just any old turtle that are coming here to nest and we are able to release
01:31them back into the wild.
01:32The ones they are going to release into the wild are rehabilitated so therefore you know
01:37there's a lot of care and concern and I think if you look at all the people here today you'll
01:41see there's a need for this sort of thing in Dubai because there needs to be more environmental
01:48awareness.
01:49We live in a concrete jungle and it's nice to come out and see something which is natural
01:53and hopefully sustainable.
01:57They have to know what is important for the environment first of all and this is not only
02:02studies.
02:03Most of them they are giving importance for studies, so not only importance for some extracurricular
02:08activities, other activities.
02:09They have to know, they have to study about animals, birds, everything.
02:14The Emirates Marine Environmental Group hopes to increase awareness of the threats to the
02:19marine ecosystems in the UAE as well as the need to reduce waste and protect the environment.
