00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Wednesday, October 5. Here are the top
00:06stories at this hour.
00:08Russia has sent an advanced S-300 missile system to the Syrian port of Tartus as tensions
00:13escalate between Moscow and Washington over the five-year conflict.
00:18The announcement on Tuesday came after the US said it was suspending talks with Moscow
00:23aimed at reviving a ceasefire deal on Syria.
00:26On the ground, Syrian forces advanced on rebels during intense street fighting in
00:30the opposition-held east of Aleppo city. The UN rights chief, meanwhile, called for action
00:35to halt the ghastly avalanche of violence unfolding in Aleppo.
00:40US Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence called Russian President Vladimir Putin
00:45a small and bullying leader and condemned his actions in Syria. Pence took a harder
00:50line than Donald Trump at a contentious debate with Democratic rival Tim Kaine on Tuesday.
00:56But for more than 90 minutes at Longwood University in Virginia, neither Pence nor
01:00Kaine appeared to deliver a knockout punch.
01:03Google launched an aggressive challenge to Apple and Samsung on Tuesday, introducing
01:07its own line of smartphones called Pixel. The new phones represent a big new push by
01:12Google to sell its own consumer devices instead of largely just supplying software for other
01:17manufacturers. Google executives touted features such as a powerful camera and long-lasting
01:22battery during a product event on Tuesday.
01:25Actor and director Ben Stiller said he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer two years
01:29ago and said a controversial early screening test had saved his life. The Zoolander star,
01:3450, said he was diagnosed in June 2014 and that after surgery he was declared cancer-free
01:40three months later. He described the three months between his diagnosis and treatment
01:45as a crazy rollercoaster ride with which about 180,000 men a year in America can identify.
01:52And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 34 degrees Celsius, dropping
01:56to 28 degrees at night. That's all for now. Thank you for watching. As always, you can
02:00get the latest news on golfnews.com.
