00:00Good day, welcome to the Gulf News update for Thursday February 23rd. Here are the top
00:06stories at this hour.
00:07For the first time, astronomers have discovered seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a single
00:12nearby star, and these new worlds could hold life. This cluster of planets is less than
00:1740 light-years away in the constellation Aquarius, according to NASA and the Belgian-led research
00:22team who announced the discovery.
00:25The planets circle tightly around a dim dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1, barely the size of
00:29Jupiter. Three are in the so-called habitable zone, the area around a star where water and
00:34possibly life might exist.
00:37UN-brokered Syrian peace talks resume in Geneva, but hopes of a breakthrough are dim, clouded
00:42by persistent violence and deadlock over the country's political future.
00:46On the eve of the talks, ten months after the last round of negotiations in the Swiss
00:51city, Russia called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to stop his bombing campaign during
00:56the discussions.
00:57The Brit Awards recognised big international stars including Drake and Beyonce and a cross-section
01:02of home-grown talent at London's O2 Arena, but the ceremony was overshadowed by the much-missed
01:08David Bowie and George Michael. Bowie, who died in January 2016 at age 69, was crowned
01:14British Male Artist of the Year and won British Album of the Year for Backstar, released days
01:18before his death. The show paid tribute to George Michael, who died on Christmas Day
01:22last year aged 53.
01:25Bollywood actress and Splash brand ambassador Katrina Kaif will be at the Mall of the Emirates
01:30this evening from 7pm. Kaif, whose next film, Jagger Jassus, opposite Ranbir Kapoor, releases
01:36in April, will walk the ramp to showcase Splash's spring-summer 2017 collection before meeting
01:42fans at Centrepoint in the mall.
01:45And finally, the weather today is high across the UAE, with 29 degrees Celsius dropping
01:49to 17 degrees at night.
01:52That's all for now, thank you for watching. A reminder, our next bulletin will be on Sunday,
01:55but you can always get the latest news on golfnews.com.
