00:00I think we can all agree that Star Wars has its share of confusing moments on-screen,
00:06such as how Natalie Portman's Padme Amidala falls in love with a whiny little...
00:12But anyway, that's not the point of this list.
00:15This list is about the scenes we didn't see.
00:18I'm Sean Farrick, and I'm here for What Culture's Star Wars, and here are 10 deleted Star Wars
00:23scenes that explain confusing moments.
00:26Number 10.
00:27Where did Greedo come from?
00:28The Phantom Menace.
00:30Responsible for cultivating the biggest debate in the entire Star Wars universe, Greedo was
00:34among one of the first characters given a name in the original trilogy, and was also
00:37one of the first to be fried.
00:38Whether you're on the side of Team Han or Team Greedo in this race to the trigger, there's
00:42no denying the impact this character had on the fanbase, even if his screen time did only
00:46amount to around two minutes.
00:48But besides the fact that he's one of Jabba the Hutt's hired hands and has no love for
00:51the lovable Han Solo, not much is known about Greedo.
00:54Because he is never mentioned again in the original trilogy, George Lucas did go back
00:58and address the character in one of the Phantom Menace's deleted scenes.
01:01The scene opens with Anakin and a young alien boy fighting.
01:04Qui-Gon comes along and breaks up the scuffle, telling Anakin that he must learn to live
01:07with others having their own opinions.
01:09The two boys disperse, and the alien boy's mother calls him Greedo.
01:13Not only does this scene give the audience a little bit more of an insight into Anakin's
01:16inner anger, something badly missing from the Phantom Menace, and throw in some extra
01:20Qui-Gon Jinn into the mix, but it also just adds that extra layer of depth to Greedo's
01:25origin story.
01:26Number 9.
01:27What happened to Lobot, The Empire Strikes Back?
01:30Lobot is introduced as being Lando Calrissian's mysterious right-hand man atop Cloud City
01:35in The Empire Strikes Back, following around in almost every scene and eventually helping
01:38put his escape plan into full effect.
01:40From his silent demeanour to his huge headphone-like accessory, Lobot was a character that had
01:44viewers engaged whenever he popped up.
01:47Everything from his origin, role, loyalties and fate were initially left up in the air
01:50by Lucas, however he did go back and provide an answer to one of those questions in one
01:54of the film's deleted scenes.
01:56Having initiated Lando's escape plan, Lobot is seen ducking and weaving from Vader's
01:59garrison of stormtroopers.
02:00Unfortunately for the Bespin native, the scene comes to an end with him turning a corner,
02:04being discovered by some troopers and then being hauled off for the remainder of the
02:07film.
02:08Audience had seen enough in the first two Star Wars films to know that being taken into
02:11Imperial captivity was not the best fate in the galaxy, but at least this scene shows
02:16Lobot's capture given Lando, Leia and Chewbacca a heads up.
02:208.
02:21How did Luke react to Han's death, The Last Jedi?
02:24Luke and Han go on an extraordinary journey throughout the original trilogy, growing from
02:28a naive farm boy and morally grey rogue to two close heroes of the galaxy.
02:32Their initially contrasting personalities end up aligning into one of the most wholesome
02:35relationships in the franchise, making it all the more sad that audiences never got
02:39one last scene of the pair in any of the Disney trio of films.
02:43In fact, Han's tragic death at the hands of his own son was not only helped in part
02:47by Luke's failure as a Grandmaster to Ben Solo, but was pretty quickly brushed aside
02:51throughout most of The Last Jedi.
02:53Leia could sense Han's death as it happened, so the effect such an event would have had
02:56on someone as in tune with the Force as Luke would have been something truly to behold.
03:01Whilst audiences don't get to see it as it happens, there is a beautiful cutscene
03:04in The Last Jedi where the former Grandmaster retreats into his tent and is momentarily
03:08broken by his friend's death.
03:10So many emotions seem to be rushing through to him, from the failure to guide his nephew
03:14to the loss of someone so close to him, and Mark Hamill sells it wonderfully.
03:18Number 7.
03:19Leia explains Han's freezing and Lando's loyalties to Luke, The Empire Strikes Back.
03:24Lando Calrissian's betrayal of Han, Leia, Chewie and C-3PO in The Empire Strikes Back
03:28remains one of the biggest backstabs in cinema history, and perfectly illustrates the sombre
03:33helplessness feel conveyed throughout the entire film.
03:35Lando doesn't stay a baddie for long, however, and goes some way in redeeming himself by
03:39helping the rebels escape after Han Solo's carbon freezing, even risking life and limb
03:43to go back and pick up Luke after his duel with Vader.
03:46We next pick up with the gang at the start of Episode 6, where Luke has supposedly been
03:50properly introduced to Lando, told of Han's situation, been able to locate where exactly
03:54he's been taken, and formulated a plan on how to get him back.
03:58Whilst it's not a stretch for audiences to imagine all of this being explained to
04:00Luke in between the two films, George Lucas did actually take the time to shoot a whole
04:04scene of Leia explaining everything to the wounded Jedi.
04:07The Princess explains that Han had been frozen and that Lando put a tracker on Boba Fett's
04:11Slave 1 ship, giving the audience the perfect reasoning as to why everyone was all pally-pally
04:15in Return of the Jedi.
04:16Number 6.
04:17What happened to crashed podracers?
04:19The Phantom Menace.
04:20There's no denying that one of Star Wars' greatest moments is the Boonta Eve classic
04:24podrace from The Phantom Menace.
04:26Everything from the parade of flags, up to the oppressive Practical Spectator set, to
04:30the variety in noises from each and every pod helps to ramp up the tension prior to
04:34the race, and the adrenaline-pumping sequences once things get underway do a great job in
04:38keeping everything enthralling.
04:40Audiences are told a lot about the dangers of podracing throughout the movie, with Anakin
04:43Skywalker supposedly the only human in the galaxy with the level of reflexes needed to
04:48compete in such an event.
04:49And throughout the race, the dangers are indeed shown first-hand, with Anakin having to think
04:53fast in a seat on more than one occasion, and every racer bar Skywalker spinning off
04:57and crashing into the Tatooine sands.
04:59Whilst it may be easy to think of these racers as all done for, a deleted scene from the
05:02film shows a small carrier flying over to crash ships and dispensing a few repair droids
05:06to fan the flames and make whatever fixes they can to the damaged pods, giving us hope
05:10that a few podracers actually got out of there with most of their limbs.
05:155.
05:16Did Luke see the Tantive IV storming?
05:18A New Hope
05:19From the Tantive IV pursuit, Vader's entrance and Luke Skywalker staring off into the sunset,
05:23A New Hope has so many iconic and legendary shots in its just-opening 20 minutes or so.
05:29However, matching up where everyone is at any given time can be a little hard to pin down.
05:34Audiences are shown the scale and scope of the film's opening space battle, with huge
05:37laser shots, ships capable of devouring other spacecrafts, and escape pods being jettisoned
05:42off into the planet's atmosphere.
05:44One of Lucas' deleted scenes from A New Hope features Luke charging something up at
05:48one of Tatooine's power towers, when he does indeed see the space battle unfolding
05:52in the skies above.
05:53The green bolts of the Empire Star Destroyer and the red of the Tantive IV are both present,
05:57doing a nice job in tying the two storylines together a little bit earlier than most fans
06:01are used to.
06:02Luke's awe and wonder at the battle over his head in these deleted scenes goes a long
06:05way in answering questions about why the young farm boy was so obsessed with joining the
06:10Academy, all things spacecraft, and eventually getting himself off the rock of Tatooine.
06:154.
06:16Why did Qui-Gon not notice Maul's probes?
06:19The Phantom Menace
06:20Hunting down Queen Amidala of the Naboo in the sands of Tatooine, Darth Maul is shown
06:24setting up a series of probe droids in order to go to the nearby town and locate either
06:28her or the Jedi Knights protecting her.
06:30For the remainder of the scenes on the desert planet, these probes are seen buzzing around
06:34and getting pretty up close to each and every one of the main characters, presumably feeding
06:38all of that information back to their Sith Lord owner in the process.
06:41One question most Star Wars fans have wondered about why none of the Tatooine residents,
06:46or the Force-sensitive Jedi, ever even mention it to them.
06:50One deleted scene from the film, however, does show Anakin and Qui-Gon Jinn on their
06:53way to the Naboo spacecraft, where the Jedi Master suddenly lashes out and destroys one
06:57of the probes stalking up behind them.
06:59Qui-Gon remarks that he's never seen a probe like this one before, and the two of them
07:02begin running off toward the horizon.
07:04This scene also helps to provide some context around why exactly audiences see Anakin and
07:09Qui-Gon running toward the spaceships before Maul attacks them.
07:123.
07:13Did Dooku and Anakin meet before duelling?
07:16Attack of the Clones
07:17Following on from a mysterious and enthralling villain such as Darth Maul would be a daunting
07:21task for most characters, boy, was Count Dooku worth watching Attack of the Clones
07:25for.
07:26Christopher Lee's character, despite being surrounded by a bunch of CG'd character
07:29for most of the film, absolutely oozes the charm and mysterious tone of the movie, and
07:35he proves himself to be a formidable foe for the Jedi to face off against.
07:39His standoff against Anakin in the finale is one of the standout moments of the film,
07:43with the cool experience of the Count acting as a nice contradiction to the brash recklessness
07:47of Anakin's youth.
07:48When the lights go out in the chamber, Dooku's red lightsaber begins to foreshadow the young
07:52Jedi's fate, casting a red shimmer over his face as the two duel for extra points.
07:57Plenty have speculated, given Dooku's close connection with Qui-Gon Jinn, over how much
08:01the Count knew of Anakin by the time Attack of the Clones rolled around, and whether the
08:06two had even met before their duel.
08:08In one deleted scene from the film, Anakin and Padme Amidala are shown being brought
08:11in front of Dooku following their capture on Geonosis.
08:14While Skywalker and the Count don't exchange any words, Dooku does float the idea of Padme
08:19using her sway in Naboo to join his Separatist coalition.
08:23Number 2
08:24What were the Rebels doing during Palpatine's rise?
08:27Revenge of the Sith.
08:28Chancellor Palpatine's sinister plan to eliminate the Jedi Order and bring in a new
08:32Galactic Empire as a replacement to the Old Republic was cunning, calculated and conducted
08:37with an unnerving level of brilliance.
08:40Fans of the series might have been too preoccupied with the action that was beginning to ramp
08:43up at the time, but the seeds for the Rebel Alliance were also already being sown in the
08:48background, however.
08:49In a series of deleted scenes, George Lucas attempts to answer some of the questions fans
08:53have surrounding the rise of the Emperor, namely why no-one seemingly stood in his way
08:57besides a couple of Jedi Masters.
08:59These scenes depict the likes of Bail Organa, Mon Mothma and Padme Amidala discussing the
09:03political consequences for some of the film's biggest moments, and see most of the Senators
09:07present start to make the preparations for an alliance against the Chancellor and build
09:11for the preservation of the Republic.
09:12Because it's clear that any of these scenes would have felt shoehorned into the film,
09:16they do help cast an extra light in showing that there was some resistance to the Emperor's
09:21rise to power.
09:22Number 1.
09:23How close were Luke and Biggs?
09:25A new hope.
09:26Biggs Darklighter might just be the most mysterious character in all of Star Wars history.
09:30A final cut of A New Hope shows him to be one of the Rebel Alliance's most capable
09:33pilots and he embraces Luke Skywalker as an old friend when the two are reunited on the
09:37eve of the Death Star attack on Yavin 4.
09:40It's revealed that the two of them do indeed have a long history of friendship, and that
09:43their embracing on Yavin was intended to be much more meaningful than what the final cut
09:47offered.
09:48One of Lucas's deleted scenes from the film shows Luke and Biggs having a final meeting
09:51together sharing drinks and stories about their future paths.
09:54There's a real openness between the pair, sharing their affections for each other and
09:58playfully talking about old times with a nice amount of nostalgia in their voices.
10:02This deleted scene not only makes Luke look even more like a warm and friendly hero, but
10:06it develops a relationship that's become famous for being seemingly underdeveloped
10:10by the Star Wars universe before.
10:11It also answers the question of why Luke looked genuinely affected by Biggs' death at the
10:15hands of Darth Vader before his trench run.
10:17And that's everything for our list today guys.
10:19If you reckon there's any other crucial deleted scenes out there that we've failed to mention,
