‘Good Newwz’ film review: Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor deliver a cracking act

00:00What you have is a sperm swap and it's a comedy of errors that arise from this very bizarre scenario.

00:11This is Manjusha Radhakrishnan from Gulf News Tabloid and I've just been to watch one of the

00:16last movies of 2019, Good News. It's a Bollywood movie starring Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor,

00:23Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Adwani and it is directed by the first-timer Raj Mehta.

00:28It's born out of a very bizarre sperm swap accident that happens when two women are trying

00:34to fall pregnant, they go to the same clinic and they have the same last name. So there's a

00:39confusion and the technician makes an error where he injects the wrong sperm into the womb. So what

00:44you have is a sperm swap and it's a comedy of errors that arise from this very bizarre scenario.

00:50Now such a scenario is best in movies, when it happens in real life it's a whole different,

00:55it's a tragedy of sorts but it's the string of comic situations that arise when these two

01:01couples have to grapple with this impossible and life-altering scenario. Here's what I loved about

01:07the movie, firstly Akshay Kumar who plays Varun Batra, almost a man-child who simply doesn't know

01:13how to grapple with the fact that you know his wife is pregnant with somebody else's child,

01:19is spot on. His comic timing is so good and there are times when he laughs

01:24aloud and you can't help but laugh with him because he's one of the few actors

01:28where his laughter is contagious. He's laughing, we are laughing with him not at him. So it's a lot

01:33of fun to watch this movie because Akshay Kumar is in top form here. There is Kareena Kapoor too,

01:38who is also a very good accomplished actress, I mean in dramatic scenes where she talks about how

01:44difficult it is for a woman to be pregnant, what is her feeling towards having a child and why she

01:50wants to be a mother so badly and when her biological clock is ticking, the fears of every

01:55modern woman is portrayed very very well. She's a working woman, they waited for seven years before

02:00having a child and she's scared that her eggs would dry up soon. So it's a fear that I think

02:05every woman, a modern working woman goes through and she has mirrored their situation very well.

02:10And then there is Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Dhwani, this couple again called the Batras. The whole

02:14thing, the confusion arose because then they share similar last names. So what you have are

02:20the Batras fighting against each other, wondering how to get their head around this impossible

02:26scenario. Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Dhwani play this flashy Punjabi couple. Their gleaming sweatpants

02:32made of velvet, shiny velvet, you know does not compare to their heart of gold. Although they

02:39wear flashy clothes, they wear their heart on the sleeves too. This is one of the examples of a very

02:43well-cast movie. Director Raj Mehta, it's his first movie, has done an impressive job of extracting

02:50every juice out of this novel idea. It's not very common for Bollywood movies to grapple with

02:55pregnancies etc. So they've done a good job of this and they've been very open about pregnant

03:02women and the kind of problems they face through and they've given it a humorous touch. It's well

03:07written, the jokes land. I did not find myself getting bored at all. The first half moves at a

03:12very quick pace. The second half goes a bit dramatic and there are parts when it gets feel

03:16slightly restless but it's not a painful watch. In fact, good news, there is good news to be

03:22said in 2019. It's a good film. It's not a laborious watch and it was not a painful

03:27labor to sit through the movie. I have gone with three out of five.
