NATO defence ministers are meeting in Brussels in the wake of a call between US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin that has raised fears that Ukraine will be cut out of peace talks. Trump's opening of talks with Putin has shocked many in Europe, who insist Kyiv and its allies must be involved in negotiations to end the nearly three-year war.

00:00We had a great call and it lasted for a long time, over an hour.
00:27This morning.
00:28I also had with President Zelensky a very good call after that.
00:33And I think we're on the way to getting peace.
00:36I think President Putin wants peace and President Zelensky wants peace and I want peace.
00:42I just want to see people stop getting killed.
00:45And I think we'll probably end up at some point getting a ceasefire in the not too distant
00:49future.
01:07One man in the world capable of convening the parties together to bring peace and that's
01:12President Donald Trump, which he demonstrated yesterday in speaking to both Vladimir Putin
01:18and Zelensky and bringing about, we believe, a durable, lasting peace on the continent,
01:24which his goal is to stop the killing and bring that peace, that it's in the interest
01:30of the continent and the United States to do so.
01:47It's regrettable, and I say that too, it's part of the truth, that the Trump administration
01:53has already made public concessions to Putin before the start of negotiations, before
02:00the negotiations even started.
02:02From my point of view, it would have been better to talk about a possible NATO membership,
02:06the Ukraine or about possible area losses of the country only at the negotiating table
02:12and not to take it off the table beforehand.
