00:00The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or PHIVOLCS, underscores the importance of using local languages in the production of information materials for the DANAS project.
00:11Lizelle Marie Ejeda of Philippine Information Agency, Iloilo, has the details.
00:18The use of local languages in the production of information materials was underscored in the DANAS project of the DOSD PHIVOLCS, consisting of sourcebooks and video compilations.
00:30The DANAS project was meant to harness the locals' first-hand knowledge of past disaster events using in-depth interviews documented in local languages.
00:39Project DANAS stands for Earthquake, Tsunami, and Volcano Disaster Narratives for an Experiential, Knowledge-Based Science Communication.
00:48According to DOSD PHIVOLCS, descriptions of earthquake, tsunami, and volcano events of eyewitnesses were compiled alongside scientific terms into sourcebooks,
00:59easing science communication and helping disaster risk reduction and management practitioners in educating the public about geological practices.
01:08The sourcebooks were translated in Ilocano, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicol, Hiligaynon, and Cebuano local languages.
01:17We encourage all of you to actively use the materials that we develop as they were designed to be tools that can be used to significantly enhance our effort for the experience and understanding of the various hazards.
01:34The production of the materials has likewise tapped the expertise of the academe, such as the University of the Philippines Visayas and Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University.
01:46UPV Chancellor Dr. Clement Camposano meanwhile emphasized the importance of utilizing local languages in disseminating scientific information critical to communities and encouraging involvement in disaster preparedness.
02:00Camposano also acknowledged the members of the local press in helping communicate to the public such that the messages conveyed are better understood.
02:09From the Philippine Information Agency, Iloilo, Lizelle Marie Hedda for Balitang Pambansa.
