00:00Hello everybody and welcome to the final of IPL 2021 with Golf News and Mr. Cricket UAE,
00:17Aris Sajjan himself.
00:19Now, that was an absolute thriller, massive high-scoring game, Chennai looked to be running
00:26away with it, but while they won by 27 runs there, it was nothing but an easy cruise.
00:34Aris, do you want to just take us through what you thought of it, being there at the
00:39stadium yourself?
00:40Oh, yes.
00:41Thank you, Matt.
00:42Hello, Arjan.
00:43I'm sure a very happy Arjan, but to be very honest, the margin looks 27, but I'll be saying
00:49that it was an emphatic victory by CSK.
00:52A couple of things I would like to point out, you know, when you play a big final and against
00:55a big opponent like CSK, you probably, when you win the toss, you bat first.
00:59I know Owen Morgan said after the toss that he feels that the deal will come into picture,
01:05but there was nothing like that.
01:07And secondly, mind you, they were not playing at Sharjah Cricket Ground where they were
01:10chasing 130, 135, 140.
01:12They were playing in Dubai Cricket Ground.
01:15The wicket was beautiful.
01:16And when an opposition puts up almost 200 runs, it's not easy to chase.
01:20And that is where Owen Morgan lost it.
01:22But mind you, the middle order was absolutely pathetic throughout the tournament.
01:26And the injury to Tripathi added probably further woes to CSK, rather KKR.
01:33KKR.
01:34And Arjan, you must be delighted you were there at the stadium as well, and you managed
01:40to find time to come and have a chat before you go and celebrate.
01:44What's it feel like?
01:46The thing that I loved about this match is that sometimes KKR were actually in a great
01:53position to win.
01:54But I think KKR just threw away the game.
01:57I mean, sure, until the last few overs, KKR was still hitting six, trying to manage to
02:03grasp that wicket, but it was just out of reach for them.
02:08I think the match was really, really good.
02:10I loved how Ruchiraj and Faf and all CSK's batting line-up played.
02:16I'm sad that Dhoni didn't get a chance to participate that much.
02:19Sure, he was a great keeper, but he didn't get to bat.
02:23That's kind of sad.
02:24Do you think he's a great keeper?
02:25He dropped two sitters.
02:26He dropped a simple dolly.
02:28It could have cost them the match.
02:29Today, we are happy because we won it.
02:32But had they lost, it would have been because of MS Dhoni's dropped catch.
02:35Yeah, but still, I mean, this could be his last cricket match ever.
02:43So, it gives him the licence to drop a catch, huh?
02:47Yeah, it gives him the licence to drop a catch.
02:49Benefit of the doubt, given what he's provided over the years.
02:53Now, you talked about Dhoni.
02:57That's one thing we have to talk about.
02:59Where does he go from here?
03:01I mean, we know that he's going to mentor the India team in the upcoming World Cup.
03:04But do you think he'll hang up his gloves?
03:09To be very honest, Matt, I would be surprised that he will continue as a player for CSK.
03:14I don't think he should.
03:16But knowing MS Dhoni, he's always come out on a high.
03:18Whether it was international cricket for Test cricket or ODI, he doesn't want to leave it on a low.
03:25And he's not one of those guys who likes limelight.
03:28He'll suddenly announce his retirement.
03:30And I wouldn't be surprised because when I had a quiet word with Fleming,
03:34he said that he's in the twilight of his career.
03:37I'm not sure whether he's going to continue.
03:39But as much as I know MS Dhoni's feelings about as a player, he would not continue.
03:47And don't be surprised, he might come in the CSK camp as a mentor as he's coming for the India team.
03:52Yeah. And Arjun, obviously, you mentioned that there as well.
03:56What about, if that is the case, what's the future for this champion Chennai team?
04:02Where do they go?
04:03I mean, maybe mentor comes in.
04:07Yeah, they'll need to find a new structure there on the field.
04:14Yeah, I think first step is mentor. Second step is coach.
04:20I hope Dhoni is going to become the future head coach for India.
04:24I really hope that's going to happen.
04:26I know...
04:28It won't happen, Arjun. I can tell you now, it won't happen.
04:32If it had to happen, he would have taken up the job after Ravi Shastri resigned.
04:35He's one of those guys, you know, who has achieved so much in his life.
04:39This is the last thing.
04:40He's also taken this mentorship job, beta, just because he was forced by Virat Kohli.
04:45And he's doing it for free.
04:47And as much as the news is out, he might have a surprise coach. So, wait and watch.
04:54That's someone who's got his ear in the know.
04:58Now, we talked about the innings.
05:01That was a great 1-9-2 on a big Dubai field.
05:06There was a lot of boundaries there, despite it being a big stadium.
05:13That's one curious point.
05:14The other one is the fine margins of such a cricket match.
05:19We saw Faf score a great innings, but he could have been stumped on two.
05:25And Utapa was also dropped.
05:28And he also survived a review.
05:30Now, these fine margins can be really crucial.
05:34Do we think that's what IPL is all about?
05:36That these things can turn the match on its head?
05:40Of course, Matt.
05:41As you said about Faf, he was missed by Dinesh Karthik.
05:45You see, sometimes when your batting doesn't do the job, it automatically tells on your wicket-keeping.
05:51And moreover, not only the stumping.
05:54As well as, today KKR were ragged on the field.
05:57Like, we were in the stadium, we could see that Owen Morgan hardly missed a couple of balls.
06:02In fact, nothing was going their way.
06:04Except, you can say that the drop catch by MS Dhoni and the catch of Gill, which hit the top of the camera.
06:11Otherwise, they would have been probably done and dusted.
06:13They would have been finishing this match much more earlier.
06:15But such things happen in the game of cricket.
06:17But I will have to be very honest.
06:19CSK was the dominant side for two reasons which I mentioned.
06:22One, they were playing in Dubai for a longer time.
06:25So, they had the experience of playing in Dubai.
06:27Whereas, KKR, as I said, were coming through slow pitches in Sharjah.
06:32Where they had to chase around 135-140.
06:35But from 140, when you are chasing 190, it's not easy.
06:38And that's what you could see, the difference between the two teams.
06:41Bearing the openers, there was hardly anybody contributing from KKR.
06:45And the injury to Tripathi did not help.
06:47Okay.
06:49Yeah, he limped off in the first innings.
06:55Shyam has also joined.
06:57Shyam is here. That's good.
06:59That's another man at the stadium.
07:01Glad to see you, Shyam.
07:07Just a minute.
07:09Okay.
07:12It's a little noisy here.
07:14It's not like the usual.
07:16It's pretty noisy here.
07:18I can hear the sound from outside coming.
07:20And this chat room is a press box.
07:22I think we'll have to live with it.
07:24No, no problem, Shyam. Go ahead.
07:28Shyam, are you ready?
07:34I'm good to go.
07:36I'm just worried about my light lighting.
07:38No, it's fine. It's clear.
07:40We're already rolling, Shyam.
07:42The good thing is,
07:44obviously,
07:46we were just talking about how it was such a thrilling match.
07:48Just what was your overall take on
07:50the game, the chase,
07:52and obviously
07:54the ultimate collapse of KKR?
07:58Okay, you're asking me?
08:00Yes.
08:02Okay. Basically, I think
08:04Fab took the match away from
08:06the KKR.
08:09If you look back at the KKR matches,
08:11it's the middle overs
08:13that have been throttling the opposition.
08:15Basically, they used
08:17all the spinners
08:19to slow down the scoring
08:21and the scoring becomes so slow
08:23that they are unable to
08:25step up the accelerator later
08:27in the snow.
08:29Today, what happened was Fab completely
08:31dismantled that.
08:33He raced through the middle overs.
08:35He ravaged every ball in the middle overs.
08:37There was no let-up
08:39after the power play.
08:41Actually, that was the main
08:43difference today, which is why
08:45if it was not for the last
08:47over by Mavi, I think he gave
08:49only 8 runs. Otherwise,
08:51Chennai would have easily crossed 200.
08:55To me, that Fab's knock was the difference.
08:59We were talking about that earlier with Anas there
09:01that you said this game could have been done
09:03and dusted a lot earlier.
09:05There was a great chase
09:07in the first half of the innings
09:09by KKR.
09:11They were actually ahead
09:13from where Chennai
09:15were in their rowing innings.
09:19What exactly happened
09:21to cause that?
09:23Four men down in 16 balls?
09:25What do you think happened?
09:27Actually, there's a pressure
09:29telling on them.
09:31Even at 91 for no loss,
09:34the first wickets went down.
09:36Even at that point,
09:38I had a look at the scoring rate.
09:40The required
09:42run rate was even at that point
09:4410.73, which is very
09:46high.
09:48They were still behind the run rate.
09:52When Venkatesh Iyer left,
09:54that means the rest of the batsmen
09:56has to come in and have a go at it straight away
09:58even without settling down.
10:00What happened was that
10:02two wickets in three balls
10:04I think that broke
10:06the KKR challenge there.
10:10Arjun, obviously with the World Cup
10:12coming up and there's been a lot of debates
10:14about who comes in and who's been left out.
10:16Who's been your
10:18find of the
10:20tournament as far as the Indian players go?
10:22Who's been the star man that
10:24we didn't expect?
10:27Um...
10:29Curveball.
10:31Dhoni! Dhoni! Dhoni!
10:35Yeah, actually Dhoni.
10:37I didn't expect Dhoni to
10:39actually be the mentor for the team.
10:41I thought he was just going to
10:43continue playing the T20 World Cup.
10:45I mean, there was a little
10:47chance that he was actually going to be in the squad
10:49but when it came to me that
10:51he was actually going to be the mentor, I was
10:53so surprised.
10:55He was out of the squad.
10:57And Anis,
10:59who's your find of the tournament?
11:01It obviously has
11:03to be Rituraj Gaikwad. You see, we saw
11:05glimpses of him in the last tournament.
11:07I used to remember when he started,
11:09he had gone for five innings without scoring
11:11anything. But mind you,
11:13that's the secret about and the success
11:15for CSK. They back their players
11:17because they identify players who do good
11:19and after that, Rituraj Gaikwad
11:21has not looked back. In the last five
11:23innings in the CSK
11:25in 2020, he scored some 250 runs
11:27and this year, he's the orange cap
11:29holder. That shows how CSK
11:31back their players. And whether
11:33it is Rituraj Gaikwad,
11:35whether it is Shardul Thakur, they
11:37back their players to the court. But when you look
11:39at the opposition team, whether it is the Punjab
11:41or the Delhi, they keep changing players.
11:43And one reason for CSK
11:45to do well is that they
11:47know which player is going to perform
11:49and who is going to deliver. And even when they
11:51lost last year, they did not make any
11:53noise. They just went about their business.
11:55Picked up Mohin Ali. If you see, there's
11:57not much change and Robin Uthappa probably is the
11:59only surprise. Rest of the squad is almost
12:01the same. I'm sure people agree.
12:03It is something that
12:05shows you something about the
12:07CSK batting that
12:09the guy that was closest to him was
12:11missed out by two runs.
12:13He could have actually taken the orange cap
12:15right at the end there.
12:17Yes, Shyam,
12:19back to you.
12:21What's your
12:23take on the tournament as a whole?
12:25Obviously, it's been the longest one on
12:27record given its postponement in May.
12:29That's saying something
12:31given that this is a long competition.
12:33Star player,
12:35biggest upset
12:37and overall take
12:39on being again in the
12:41U80?
12:43To me,
12:45let me start
12:47with something which you didn't ask.
12:49To me, the
12:51discovery of the tournament
12:53was Venkatesh Iyer.
12:55Because Ruturaj,
12:57I always expected him to
12:59do well because even when
13:01Chennai
13:03dropped him earlier last year,
13:05I was sure that he'll come good and
13:07he did towards the end of the tournament
13:09when Chennai was out of the tournament.
13:11They gave chances to everybody and
13:13came out with very good marks.
13:15So, it was
13:17not a surprise for me to see him
13:19do well this year because I knew that
13:21this man is ready for this year.
13:23But to me, the biggest
13:25surprise was Venkatesh Iyer.
13:27I kept asking, where did this guy
13:29come from? We haven't heard of him
13:31till now. And look at the confidence
13:33at which he bats and the kind
13:35of timing he's got. It's just phenomenal.
13:37Terrific. Absolutely.
13:39Even today, the ball
13:41was just racing off the bat.
13:43That hook
13:45of
13:47Josh Hazlewood. Shahar.
13:49Yeah. No.
13:51Immediately after Dhoni
13:53dropped, he just hooked him for a
13:55six and that was a
13:57whistle actually.
13:59So, incredible.
14:01Incredible timing from him.
14:03To me, he is the final of the tournament.
14:05And to me,
14:07when you ask
14:09about the tournament, the biggest upset, of course,
14:11has to be Mumbai's exit.
14:13Nobody expected that.
14:15Even in the worst days,
14:17at least I expected
14:19Mumbai to bounce back.
14:21But it never happened.
14:23To me, that was the biggest thing.
14:25As far as the tournament goes, this is a funny tournament
14:27because if you look at the first half
14:29was played in India. The second half
14:31in UAE. And also
14:33in both places, the pitch behaved
14:35differently. Especially if you look at
14:37Chennai pitchers, slow turners,
14:39low scoring matches.
14:41Teams struggled there.
14:43And when it went to Bombay,
14:45Bombay and
14:47Ahmedabad, we had a different kind of result.
14:49And when it came to
14:51UAE, the UAE pitchers
14:53itself was different from last year.
14:55Because I expected the UAE pitchers
14:57to be a little more lively. Because last
14:59year, if you look at Nokia,
15:01Rabada and Deepak Shahar
15:03and almost Seamus had
15:05plenty of purchase last year.
15:07Pitch didn't happen this year.
15:09They did succeed
15:11but not to the same level as last year.
15:13And if you look at the scores,
15:15especially Sharjah was the biggest surprise.
15:17Because we didn't
15:19see a single 200-plus score
15:21in Sharjah. The only 200-plus
15:23score we saw in
15:25the UAE was in
15:27Abu Dhabi. That's where it was
15:29a dead match.
15:31Where Mumbai
15:33beat
15:35Hyderabad.
15:37Hyderabad.
15:39So,
15:41that was perhaps the only 200-plus
15:43score in the UAE, which was a huge
15:45surprise for me.
15:47Because to me, in a T20
15:49match, you have to see runs.
15:51Okay, I do subscribe
15:53to the fact that there has to be
15:55an even battle
15:57between bat and ball. But I would
15:59save it for the test match. I think
16:01in T20, we need to see runs.
16:03And the baller's skill is there
16:05in throttling the batsmen. This is what we
16:07see here in some of the
16:09matches, especially where
16:11KKR had the
16:13spinners of Chakravarthy,
16:15Shakibal Hassan,
16:17and Sunil Narine. We saw
16:19them tie down the batsmen
16:21with this
16:23skill. So,
16:25that is entirely
16:27possible. So, to me,
16:29that was a very exciting tournament.
16:31We didn't know who was going to be the fourth
16:33team or the third and fourth team in the playoffs.
16:35So, it was a very, very
16:37absorbing and interesting and exciting tournament
16:39for me.
16:41Okay, and obviously,
16:43we have a
16:45whole four days' break before
16:47the World Cup starts
16:49in Anger. It's going
16:51to be another thrilling test, but
16:53these pitches will be
16:55bedded in, but we've
16:57got to hope that they last the distance.
16:59Has anyone got any last
17:01comments
17:03on anything about that, just before we sign off?
17:05I'm not even thinking about it
17:07four days away.
17:11We'll have a breather.
17:13I can only say that
17:15MS Dhoni
17:17had a disappointment in
17:192020 in UAE.
17:21He had a point to prove that who's
17:23the daddy of IPL.
17:25Okay, Rohit Sharma must have won five times,
17:27but this man has taken his team
17:29to the IPL finals nine times
17:31and he proved it once again why he's called
17:33the Thalaiva.
17:35Indeed, indeed. Okay,
17:37Arjun, you've been an amazing
17:39guest for us all the way through,
17:41both on Twitter and on video.
17:43Have you got any last comments to say to your
17:45viewers out there?
17:47Every single one of you.
17:49Go CSK!
17:51Lovely,
17:53lovely.
17:55Okay, again, thank you everybody
