Before Ivanka Trump became an advisor to the President of the United States who also happens to be her father, she actually started working in the fashion industry as a model. In the late '90s, Ivanka was featured in print advertisements for Tommy Hilfiger and Sasson Jeans. She has certainly learned a thing or two about how to dress fashionably from her days as a model, but she also has had a streak of putting on some inappropriate outfits that have turned heads for all the wrong reasons. So, we've made a video that takes a look at some of Ivanka Trump's most inappropriate outfits ever.

00:00Ivanka Trump was a fashion model and a fashion designer before she was first daughter. But
00:06when her father began involving himself in politics, the context surrounding Ivanka's
00:10clothes shifted and made way for several fashion faux pas. Here are some of Ivanka's most inappropriate
00:15outfits ever.
00:18After Donald Trump was confirmed as the Republican nominee for president in 2016, Ivanka Trump
00:22seized her Republican National Convention appearance as an opportunity to publicize
00:27her own business interests while touching on American labor laws and women in the workforce.
00:32Capitalizing on her own work, Ivanka wore the baby pink Ivanka Trump sleeveless studded
00:36sheath dress from her fashion line. The following day, a tweet was posted on her verified Twitter
00:41account that read,
00:42"'Shop Ivanka's look' from her RNC speech."
00:44This was followed by a link to the dress on the Macy's website. It was an affiliate link,
00:48which indicated Ivanka could have earned additional commission from any purchases made. The $138
00:54dress promptly sold out at both Macy's and Nordstrom. Some saw the outfit choice in the
00:59subsequent tweet as shameless self-promotion, and despite Ivanka's mention of American labor,
01:04the Macy's site listed her dress as imported.
01:08In November 2016, four months after the RNC controversy, Ivanka Trump wore a $10,800 Metropolis
01:15diamond bangle from her jewelry line in an appearance on 60 Minutes alongside her family.
01:20When host Leslie Stahl asked whether Donald Trump's polarizing campaign had negatively
01:24impacted the Trump brand, Ivanka responded,
01:26"'I don't think it matters. This is so much more important — and more serious. That's
01:31the focus.'"
01:32Ivanka's decision to wear the bracelet was not particularly controversial in itself,
01:36but the marketing tactics that followed were. After the interview aired, Monica Marder,
01:40former vice president of sales for Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry, sent out a style alert
01:44press release to journalists that stated Ivanka's favorite bangle was available to buy, asking
01:49recipients to, quote, "'Please share this with your clients.'"
01:53New York Times reporter Eric Lipton tweeted in response,
01:55"'White House as QVC. It has started.'"
01:58The next day, Abigail Klem, the former president of the Ivanka Trump brand, told NBC News that
02:03the style alert email, quote, was sent by a well-intentioned marketing employee, who,
02:08like many of us, is still making adjustments post-election.
02:12In January 2017, Ivanka Trump posted a photo on Twitter of herself wearing an iridescent
02:17silver gown two days after Donald Trump had announced his Muslim ban executive order.
02:22Ivanka's dress, which was designed by Carolina Herrera and cost $5,000, drew criticism because
02:27it highlighted Ivanka's lavish lifestyle at a time when racism and human rights were central
02:32to the cultural conversation.
02:34When the Trump administration came under fire for the separation of children from their
02:37parents at the Mexican border in 2018, photos circulated of immigrant kids using sheets
02:43of silver foil as blankets.
02:45The photo of Ivanka's silver dress resurfaced, again, as a reflection of the real disparity
02:49between those in power and those affected by their policies.
02:52Multiple Twitter users, including comedian and writer Orly Matlow, posted split-screen
02:57photos of Ivanka's dress in the detained immigrant children.
03:00Matlow wrote,
03:01"'Who wore it better?
03:02Children detained in McAllen, Texas or Ivanka Trump?''
03:05"'Well, immigration is not part of my portfolio, obviously.'"
03:09In February 2017, Donald Trump gave his first address to Congress.
03:13The speech pushed the slogan, "'Buy American, Hire American,' and focused on encouraging
03:18Americans to buy American products.
03:20Ivanka Trump did not appear to have known the contents of the speech in advance because
03:24she wore a fuchsia cocktail dress by French designer Roland Moret to the event.
03:29A representative for the designer told The Independent that the dress cost $1,868 and
03:35was made in the United Kingdom.
03:37What would Donald think?
03:38"'So you do disagree with him from time to time?'
03:40"'Oh, frequently.
03:42And he knows it.'"
03:43Many onlookers pointed out the irony and hypocrisy of Ivanka's dress, given her father's message.
03:48Members of the public also questioned why the first daughter was not treated the same
03:51as former first lady Michelle Obama, noting the off-the-shoulder cut of Ivanka's dress.
03:56One Twitter user wrote,
03:57"'Remember all that crap about Michelle Obama showing her arms and if it was appropriate?
04:01Well, behold Ivanka and her shoulders.'"
04:05Black tie events indicate a formal dress code, but the lesser-known white tie dress
04:09code is even fancier, and is associated with the so-called full evening dress seen at state
04:14and royal occasions.
04:16During the Trump family's state visit to the United Kingdom in June 2019, they attended
04:20a banquet at Buckingham Palace with the queen.
04:22That was certainly a white tie affair.
04:25Ivanka Trump wore an embellished collared cornflower blue dress by Carolina Herrera,
04:30which provoked commentary on Twitter for being too casual for white tie.
04:34One of the platform's users wrote,
04:35"'Ivanka looks like she's wearing a denim dress that she personally bedazzled.'"
04:40In 2018, Ivanka Trump reportedly wore this cozy floral print jacket tied with a sash
04:45to work in Washington, D.C.
04:47According to the Daily Mail, the coat was designed by Rebecca Taylor and cost $895.
04:52Heather Tooley commented at the time in an article for Inquisitor, writing,
04:56"'It'll be interesting to see if Ivanka Trump will make pajama-like styles a trend after
05:00wearing the bathrobe coat.'"
05:02Trend or not, it wasn't the last time Ivanka wore what looked like a house coat outside
05:07of the house.
05:08In October 2019, she posted a photo to Instagram of her visit to a childcare facility on the
05:13campus of a community college in Kansas City, Missouri.
05:16The photo showed Ivanka wearing a white wrap dress with a large sash, a dress she also
05:20wore at the White House in January 2020.
05:23Some found this to be an odd choice for visiting children.
05:26One Twitter user wrote,
05:27"'Is she having a sleepover with these kids?
05:29Can't think of another reason she would be in her bathrobe.'"
05:32Another wrote,
05:33"'Ivanka, are you wearing a terrycloth bathrobe?
05:35Does it have a Trump logo on the front?'
05:38If there's one pattern that summed up the trends of 2020, it would be the red, spiky,
05:42angry spheres of coronavirus.
05:44As the virus began to spread stateside at the beginning of 2020, Ivanka Trump took a
05:48pre-lockdown trip to India and posed with a smile in front of the Taj Mahal.
05:53She captioned the snap on Instagram and Twitter on February 24, writing,
05:56"'The grandeur and beauty of the Taj Mahal is awe-inspiring.'"
06:00She wore a Proenza Schouler dress splattered with striking crimson flowers, which, to the
06:05horror and delight of some Twitter users, resembled the COVID-19 virus.
06:09Others, meanwhile, simply gave Ivanka props for re-wearing the dress, which she had previously
06:14worn during a September 2019 visit to Argentina.
