00:00The WHO and the International Diabetic Federation this time showed by 2020, at present we have
00:11around 436 million people who have been detected with diabetes.
00:18This study was conducted among an age group of 20 to 79 years old.
00:25There was a huge surge from the year 2010 to 2020.
00:32Around 2017 we had around 19.3% of UAE population who have been affected by diabetes.
00:39Again the study was taken from the age group of 20 to 79 years.
00:43We have around 1 million people who have been affected by diabetes.
00:49Among the expats, the Asian community is at more risk and among the Asians it has been
00:56Indians who have been found to be at higher risk of diabetes and more prevalent among
01:01the Indians.
01:02My name is Delilah, I'm 49 years old, I'm from India and I'm a banker.
01:07I had typical symptoms of diabetes, my body was worn out for the last couple of months
01:13and I was feeling extremely lethargic with sudden weight loss.
01:16Not to forget the frequency of water intake and the urge to urinate increased significantly.
01:22I was diagnosed with diabetes on November 16th clinically but before that some of my
01:27friends gave me a heads up by looking at my falling health because I have a strong sweet tooth.
01:33What is the reason behind this increase in diabetes among the UAE citizens or the expats?
01:42The study shows one of the risk factors are age more than or equal to 35 years, a BMI
01:48of more than or equal to 30 that is suggesting an obesity, a waist hip ratio among men to
01:56be a 0.90 and among females more than 0.85.
02:01Other cause could be sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy food habits.
02:06What are the complications?
02:07The complications could be microvascular affecting the small vessel diseases and a
02:12microvascular causing big vessel diseases.
02:17A small vessel diseases consist of affecting your eyes, what we call as diabetic retinopathy
02:25which can lead to blindness.
02:28Another would be affecting your kidney, what we call as nephropathy, diabetic nephropathy
02:34which people will land up with dialysis, a long term dialysis.
02:39Another could be a neuropathy which is affecting the sensations of your legs which could lead
02:48to diabetic food.
02:50Another could be dementia.
02:52As you all know this is a progressive disease.
02:55If you do not control initially you will land up with progression of the diseases.
02:59You can lead to dementia, Alzheimer's etc.
03:03It may affect your gums in the oral, what we call periodontal diseases.
03:09Among the macrovascular we find people land up with strokes.
03:14So daily exercising, eating right food, eating on time, increase your hydration.
03:22Hydration by itself will help in decreasing your blood sugars.
03:26After consulting Dr. Shafiq my lifestyle and routine took a 360 degree turn and I had to
03:31immediately cut down on carbs in all forms to bring the sugar levels to an acceptable
03:36mark.
03:37I was advised to have 5 meals a day in small portions and dinner cannot be after 7.30pm.
03:4330 minutes walk or light workout and doctor visits are very essential.
03:47I have been taking the advices very seriously provided by Dr. Shafiq and ensuring that I
03:52do not miss on my food and medicine intake as advised.
03:55I generally never google any diseases but follow whatever Dr. Shafiq tells me.
04:00I think it's not right to diagnose or self-treat yourself.
04:04If you have any symptoms please seek medical advice as soon as possible.
04:08You have to shut your ears to some people as they will only confuse you.
04:12Maintain a healthy life and workout before the onset of any diseases.
04:16It's very important you have a healthy lifestyle, a healthy dietary habit, a proper medical
04:22management, you have a proper on time medications, you have a good hydration, you have a proper
04:30sleep.
04:31So with this I hope you would cope with your diseases of diabetes and you would come for
