At 16, Nepali expat Arati was a single mother and a school dropout; coming to Dubai changed her life

A single mother at the young age of 16, Rai had no choice but to start working after having dropped out of school in Grade 8. It fell on the teenager to support her parents, siblings and daughter. Nearly 11 years later, Arati changed her life, and that of her family, with hard work and support from her employer in Dubai. 00:00My name is Arati Rai, and I am from Nepal.

00:11So my parents went to India, in Meghalaya, Shillong, and I was born there.

00:19And I have two brothers and me, so we used to go to school there.

00:25Suddenly one day my father had an accident, the rock fell on his feet, then he got a severe

00:32accident where he cannot walk, he cannot do his work by himself.

00:38Then I stopped studying also, because of the financial problem, of course.

00:45I got married, so I had a child, she's a baby girl.

00:52He was behaving very badly, so I decided to leave him and I came and stay with my mother.

00:59After my daughter was born, until six months I didn't work, I was in the house only.

01:05And slowly I started to go to work in construction, where they build house as a helper.

01:13And my mother used to do also before, but when I started, I said, you take care of my child,

01:19I will do this work and I will support the family.

01:23So morning I left my daughter in the house, then evening only I used to see her.

01:28And then after that I applied for the job in Dubai.

01:34So I got selected.

01:35I decided to move to Dubai to support my family in financial and also for my daughter's study.

01:44She's not like me, like study till grade eight and then stop, but I want her to support

01:51in her future to make her dream come true.

01:54I joined EFS in 2015 November.

01:59So I was in the school for one year as a housekeeping attendant.

02:04After one year, they promoted me in team leader.

02:08So my manager told that, yes, Aarti, don't be afraid, we are with you.

02:13After two years, they called me for an interview.

02:17I didn't know why also, but they just called me, come to the office for an interview.

02:22I went and I was selected as a receptionist.

02:26I was so happy that day because when that day, when I gave the interview, that was the

02:32birthday of my daughter also, which is 5th January.

02:38Aarti is humble.

02:40She is composed.

02:41She has great organizational skills.

02:44She is hardworking.

02:46She's a multi-tasker and she takes the ownership of the task being given to her.

02:51She's a great collaborator and effective communicator.

03:02After six months, again, our group CEO, Mr. Tariq Chauhan, he called me in the office

03:10and then he said that, you are going to work with me.

03:14That day, I was so afraid because with the group CEO, I was managing reception and plus

03:22he was saying, join with me here.

03:25Then I went in his department, in corporate office, and with the help of my line manager,

03:33Ms. Shamin Nazareth, she helped me a lot.

03:36And then I was trained there also.

03:40She trained me how to do the secretarial job and all.

03:44So now I'm managing his personal account.

04:10Every time I used to speak to her, that time we didn't have phone also.

04:19So I called somebody from the village and then I asked them to have a video call with her.

04:26I always think of my daughter that I have to work for her.

04:29I love you so much.

04:48Dubai has given me so many things, safety, security.

04:53Whenever we go out, we don't feel unsafe.

04:55They gave us opportunity, what we have the ability to work, to do.

05:01It's my second home where I can feel that everyone is my family.

05:07Like whenever we go out, they give priority to ladies, to everywhere.

05:13And I feel I can take help from anyone.

05:17And plus it helped me to achieve my dreams.

05:20Till now I have done so many things for my family and my daughter.

05:24So I will continue this journey in UAE till I can.
