Dubai airline Emirates completed an Airbus A380 demonstration flight on Wednesday using 100 per cent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), making it the first airline in the world to do so.

Emirates test flight EK2641 took off from Dubai International Airport after 11 am with one of four of the A380 jumbo jet's engines to be powered by SAF. It returned to Dubai after 12.30 pm.

00:00This demonstration flight, as it's called demonstration flight, is a validation to validate
00:10the safe use of SAF 100% on one engine and that all the aircraft equipment and the engines
00:18are coping up 100% with no abnormalities on it.
00:22We have done many tests on the ground and in the engine particularly to give us that
00:28confidence and today's flight is a validation to all the tests that we need to complete
00:34on the air.
00:36Once we complete this test, the next one will be the availability of fuel on various airports
00:43and we rely on the fuel suppliers to start manufacturing and producing such a fuel on
00:51the volume that we will be requiring.
00:55That will be the challenge for all of them because there is obviously a different setup
00:59and a different source of material that's required to produce such a fuel.
01:07So I hope on the next years to come that we'll be able to see the volume of SAF being available
01:16at various airports to the required level to support airlines' requirements.
01:24We have already started picking up SAF on some airports but not to the percentage that
01:31we really require or make significant change but at least to start.
01:38Once we start, I think that starting by hopefully 10-15% within the next five years to make
01:48that fuel available across the globe, that will be quite a good achievement that we would
01:55have achieved if that can be made available to us.
