00:00In terms of acting, I thought Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon were in top form.
00:06In fact, Shahid Kapoor's relationship with his best friend Monty, played by Ashish Verma, is brilliant.
00:12I mean, they have such great chemistry as well.
00:21Good evening, this is Manjusha Radhakrishnan from Gulf News.
00:24I'm here with the review of a very complicated movie title.
00:27It's called Tere Baaton Mein Aisa Ulja Jiya.
00:30Yes, I got it right. But let me tell you, the movie is not as complicated as the title.
00:36We are talking about Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon's latest movie,
00:40which is a star-crossed romance between a robot, an android and a human being.
00:46So, Shahid Kapoor plays the 30-something young lad, while Kriti Sanon plays a humanoid.
00:52As far as concepts go and themes go, this is a very novel one.
00:56But I wish they had executed it more fairly and more convincingly.
01:00This movie is directed by Amit Joshi and Aradhana Shah.
01:03And one thing I thought was, like, they brought, I think, both these brains together,
01:08but was not able to bring it to the finish line.
01:11I mean, look at it this way, Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, in terms of acting, both of them are very good at it.
01:17In fact, Kriti Sanon had my heart.
01:19That staccato voice of a robot, or what you would expect a robot to be.
01:24She's a looker of a robot.
01:26And the way she speaks, the way she moves, the lack of emotions on her face, etc.
01:31She nailed it. And she's very good and very heartening to watch as well.
01:36She calls herself Sifra. She's a self-automated robot.
01:40And then there's Shahid Kapoor, who plays Aryan.
01:42Now, from the outset, we are told he belongs to a family where he's being forced to get married.
01:47His mother's saree is in a twist because he's yet to find a girl and therefore is forcing him to get married.
01:54He doesn't seem very keen. He seems to be a commitment-phobe of sorts.
01:58We don't know what the backstory is.
02:00And then to get off that heat from his domestic, from his home, he goes to the US,
02:06where his cool aunt, played by Dimple Kapadia, very well-cast Dimple Kapadia,
02:10she plays a robotic engineer.
02:12And what we have is this very cool aunt trying to use him as a lab rat
02:16to see whether her creation, who is Sifra, passes muster as a human rather than a robot.
02:22So he is his lab rat unwittingly.
02:25They, both Sifra and Aryan, meet. They fall in love.
02:28And once Shahid Kapoor realizes that she's a robot, he still has some, you know, feelings for her.
02:35Perhaps that's why he invites her back to India.
02:37Tells his aunt, it's a great idea if I can introduce Sifra as my fake fiancée to my folks
02:43so that they can get office back.
02:45As far as premises go, this is a lot of fun.
02:47This is supposed to be a sci-fi comedy.
02:49And those parts are really fun.
02:52If you've seen the trailer, actually you've seen most of the movie.
02:54The first half is very predictable.
02:56But it's the second half which is a mess as well.
02:58The thing is, one of the biggest letdowns of this film is that
03:02they're not able to give us a very convincing backstory
03:06on what made Aryan fall in love with Sifra, what is their bond like.
03:10I mean, we live in the age of Tinder, we live in the age of Hinge,
03:14we live in the age of fast dating apps where, you know,
03:17emotions and perhaps relationships alter at all points.
03:21So it's very difficult to believe Aryan's trajectory when it comes to his romance with Sifra.
03:28The jokes really land. I wish there were more jokes as well.
03:31One of the biggest problems I see with this film is that
03:34the directors fail to really commit to being either a sci-fi film or a comedy.
03:39They want to make a wholesome entertainer.
03:42And that's one of the biggest downfalls of this film.
03:45I mean, you cannot have a romance, have some few jokes thrown in,
03:49very vanilla kind of jokes, but not really explain
03:52what it takes for the two to work.
03:56Somehow their romance was not very convincing.
03:59In terms of acting, I thought Shahid Kapoor and Krithi Sainan were in top form.
04:05In fact, Shahid Kapoor's relationship with his best friend Monty,
04:10played by Ashish Verma, is brilliant.
04:12I mean, they have such great chemistry as well.
04:15I remember laughing out loud to some of the big scenes.
04:18The best part about this film, I would say, is the humor and the acting as well.
04:23But towards the end, I must say, it just becomes a hot mess
04:27because it's so predictable.
04:29I mean, a robot gone rogue, him falling out of love with her does not make much sense.
04:33What happens to his folks who were rabidly behind Aryan to get married, etc.
04:39None of it is explained. Everything is swiftly covered.
04:43And so it fails to, you know, it's done in a very clinical manner,
04:47almost like, you know, they're ticking the boxes,
04:49which is, I think, one of the biggest missteps done in this movie.
04:53But if you're just in the mood for, like, say, a very light, breezy entertainer,
04:57without asking too many questions, this is for you.
05:00But when it comes to, like, looking for logics, such as,
05:03why would a robotic, you know, engineer, played by Shahid Kapoor,
05:07not realize that she is an android? I mean, she's not human.
05:12All those little lags and holes are not fully developed, nor are they concealed.
05:17There are several lags in the story that make no sense.
05:20How do they transport Sifra back to India from the US, etc.
05:25And how does she go back to the world of living?
05:28Nothing is really explained.
05:30But if you're in the mood for just a breezy entertainer,
05:32without asking too many questions, perhaps this movie is for you.
05:36You should put a ring on it.
05:37For all others, I think this is a great golden opportunity gone tame and gone to waste.
05:42I've gone with 2.5 out of 5.

05:50And happy viewing at the cinemas.
