An investigation into footage circulating of a shocking altercation between a non-league player and supporters has been launched.

A video, which has gone viral on social media, appears to show supporters fighting with members of the Minehead AFC squad, a club in the Somerset County Football League.

The incident came following Minehead's 2-1 defeat at home to Stockwood Green, in which they conceded a last-gasp winner.

As players from Minehead made their way toward the dressing room after the match, a group of fans seemingly clashed with two members of the squad.

There is then a collision with the supporters as one particular player appears to receive the brunt of the attack.

He then manages to get inside the dressing room while the group continues to try to get through the door before the crowd eventually disperses.

Minehead has since released a statement on Facebook confirming an investigation into the incident has been launched.

'We are fully aware and disappointed by the incident that happened at the club yesterday afternoon,' the club said.

'This is currently being investigated, and the relevant authorities are involved. As this is an active investigation, no further comments will be made from us during this time.

Before the statement was released, a Facebook user who had come across the video confirmed that they had reported the clash to the authorities.

They wrote: 'Just seen the video of the Minehead fans piling in and thumping their players in the head. Sent the video to the police. Any comments from Minehead AFC?'

Mail Sport has contacted the Avon and SomersetPolicec, who have confirmed they are aware of the incident. The force did not comment further.

The incident is the latest shameful scene in the grassroots game, coming just one week after footage emerged of parents breaking into a mass brawl at a youth football match in November.

A scrap broke out between players in an under-10s match in Kent, with one boy being punched in the head by an opponent.

That alarming move caused parents and coaches to stream onto the pitch, but from there, the footage only gets more worrying.

Multiple men rush onto the pitch and start scrapping with each other, with one child bowled over from behind.

From there, dozens of adults rush into the commotion, and mothers can be heard screaming as children are shepherded out of the way.

Some continue scrapping for over a minute until some semblance of order appears to be restored.
