00:00Our iBelievers always want to learn.
00:03That's right.
00:04Like Francesca Clare Peñalosa. She's only 8 years old.
00:07From Las Piñas City.
00:08Hey! How are you? Hello!
00:10And this is her question of the day.
00:12How did the movies start?
00:16Francesca Clare, you're going to love the movie Making Magic.
00:19Lights, camera, action!
00:23If you want to see a cactus, you don't have to go to the desert.
00:27There are a lot of cacti sold in garden stores.
00:30It's like a movie.
00:32You don't have to go to the movies because streaming is popular.
00:36It wasn't like this before.
00:38Film technology has changed a lot since its inception in the late 1800s.
00:44Have you ever thought about how movies started?
00:47Not a single person invented it.
00:50It's the result of the persistence of different people, machines, and technology over a long period of time.
00:56Even though cameras and pictures were not invented yet,
00:59there are old movies, like the early 1830s,
01:03where toys with a series of drawings were popular.
01:07They were rotated by a disc in a Phenakistoscope.
01:11When the disc moves, the drawings also move.
01:15The perceived motion of still images is the magic behind the movies
01:19with the help of two natural phenomenon.
01:22The first is the persistence of vision.
01:25When we see something and it disappears,
01:28an image is left in our mind.
01:31When the speed of a series of images is correct,
01:34we can see their movement continuously.
01:37That's the movie magic.
01:39Aside from this, there are five phenomenon
01:41where the images seem to move when shown in a fast and proper way,
01:46like a film strip passed through a projector.
01:49This optical illusion of movement is the essence of movies.
01:55Many agree that the first feature-length narrative film
01:59is The Story of the Kelly Gang from Australia in 1906.
02:03It was followed by Birth of a Nation in 1915.
02:07In 1927 is The Jazz Singer,
02:10the first movie with synchronized sound.
02:14And in 1939, the cheaper three-color technicolor process was invented
02:19which was used in the first movies in color,
02:22like The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind.
02:25It is considered as the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s.
02:29It was the best movie production in America
02:32while Europe was destroyed during World War II.
02:35Movies became the main type of entertainment.
02:38Many people watch movies twice a week.
02:41Back then, if you didn't watch the movie in the cinema,
02:44it's probably your last chance.
02:46Good thing now, team replay is allowed.
