China’s humanoid robot Tiangong has successfully climbed up a set of steep stairs in a park in Beijing, marking the first of its kind to manage such hikes in an outdoor environment, according to its developers at the National and Local Co-built Embodied AI Robotics Innovation Center.
In a video released on Monday, the robot climbed up 134 staircases, and ran over different terrains in a park in Beijing. Developers say the robot was equipped with “brain” and “cerebellum” systems, which enables it to adjust its movements and gait in real time.
It is a major progress in the robot’s vision-based perception and locomotion abilities. The robot is also able to run at a speed of up to 12 kilometers per hour, and can manage complicated terrains, according to the engineers.
