00:00The creative economy is not just a sector, it is a catalyst for innovation, bridging
00:19cultures, and driving sustainable development.
00:23Considered as one of the fastest-growing sectors globally, the creative economy has an estimated
00:33global value of US$2.5 trillion, equivalent to 6.1% of global GDP.
00:43It provides more than 50 million jobs worldwide, while employing more people aged 15 to 29
00:53than any other sector.
00:56In 2022, Malaysia's creative goods exports reached US$12.5 billion, making it the eighth
01:07largest exporter among developing economies.
01:12Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines is among the
01:20top 50 global exporters of creative goods and services, and one of the top 10 exporters
01:29of creative goods.
01:31In 2022, the creative economy in the region generated over US$150 billion in revenue.
01:42In ASEAN, creativity in fields like film, animation, music, design, fashion, digital
01:52content, and gaming is transforming industries, empowering communities, and driving inclusive
02:00growth.
02:01By 2030, the creative economy has the potential to contribute over US$300 billion to ASEAN's
02:10GDP.
02:11During ACE's launch last year, I talked about why, as a new dialogue partner to ASEAN,
02:17the UK had made an early decision to prioritise and partner with ASEAN on the creative industries,
02:23and why this sector is so important to us, not least because culture is something we
02:28all share.
02:30I talked then about how the creative industries drive our economies, how they can help address
02:35health and wellbeing challenges, and how they can foster pride in place and contribute to
02:41community cohesion, and how the creative industries can also help drive the transition
02:47to net zero and a sustainable economy.
02:49My team from the UK mission to ASEAN and the British Council colleagues who manage the
02:54ACE programme are all here, and they'll all be delighted to talk in detail about the exciting
02:59work the ACE programme has been producing and the plans we have for the future.
03:04The discussion you'll be having here today and tomorrow will provide us with further
03:08inspiration for taking forward this programme.
03:11But I will say that the programme is closely aligned with the UK's long-term vision and
03:17our ambitions in this sector, and it's a genuinely joint plan to drive growth, to build talent
03:24and develop skills, with the key objective, and I say this again, that growing the economy
03:30means growing the creative industries.
