00:00Dozens of false killer whales stranded on a remote Tasmanian beach will be euthanized
00:08after bad weather and the isolated location hindered rescue efforts.
00:12Last night's operations were suspended at approximately 7.30pm and as we announced yesterday
00:19following expert veterinarian advice and assessment it was deemed that euthanasia was required
00:25for animal welfare reasons.
00:28The conditions that the team faced yesterday in attempts to re-float the whales proved
00:32very challenging and in fact dangerous to our staff in those prevailing conditions.
00:38More than 150 endangered false killer whales, a species of dolphin named for their resemblance
00:44to killer whales, were found stranded this week on Tasmania's northwest coast near Arthur
00:50River about 400km from Hobart.
00:53On Thursday morning, 27 dolphins were euthanized while another 38 still alive were scheduled
01:00to be put down later in the day.
01:02Meanwhile, 25 died naturally overnight.
01:06Officials described the rescue operation as highly complex due to the remote location,
01:11harsh ocean conditions and difficulties in transporting specialist equipment to the site.
