00:00LGBTQ plus rights are under assault in the US, with the Trump administration signing multiple
00:05executive orders limiting the civil liberties of members of that group. However, despite the
00:10attempts to curtail the community's involvement in sports, the military, and limiting their access
00:14to gender-affirming care, more people identify as LGBTQ than ever before. According to a recent
00:20Gallup poll, some 9.3% of all American citizens identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
00:27or non-heterosexual. That's up nearly 2% over last year, with the figure roughly doubling in
00:33just half a decade. What's more, since Gallup first began tracking the metric, that number
00:37has skyrocketed. In 2012, just 3.5% of people identified as part of that community. When the
00:43numbers are broken down generationally, the influx of LGBTQ plus people in the US is even higher.
00:48The poll found that while only 3% of boomers and 14.2% of millennials identify as lesbian,
00:54gay, bisexual, transgender, or something other than heterosexual, 23.1% of Gen Z identify as
01:01such. The majority of LGBTQ respondents identified as bisexual, making up 56.3% of the community.
01:08The survey includes the responses of some 14,000 individuals polled over telephone over the course
01:14of 2024.
