00:00What does Rishikesh mean to you?
00:07You know, I wanted to come here since I was 15 years old.
00:12Now I am 41.
00:14I came here for the first time 2 years ago.
00:17I just feel at home here.
00:20It's a place that, like you said, is somehow conducive to a different time and space.
00:36I am recognized here.
00:59I am actually just so enjoyed to be here.
01:03I just enjoy it.
01:17Will it end when you will go back?
01:23Yeah, I have visa limitations.
01:25So, I will go back as part of the end of March.
01:29So, you will leave Rishikesh?
01:35I will leave the external dimensions.
01:58The external may appear special and distinct at times.
02:28The real may appear in an external form.
02:38But the external has done its work.
02:52Only if it opens up the internal.
03:03And once it has opened up the internal, the external is no more qualified, extraordinary or distinct.
03:29Or distinct.
03:59The thing with Rishikesh is that
04:24at one point, it must call.
04:36That is the point of creation.
04:45The setting up of the world.
04:54At another point, it must keep you interested.
05:05That is like the running of the world.
05:10And then finally, Rishikesh must dissolve.
05:23That is the point of dissolution of the universe.
05:31Calls it anyway.
05:35Rishikesh calls the whole world anyway.
05:46But dissolution rarely happens.
05:48There are a lot of people who come.
05:55But there are very few who reach.
05:59Coming is wonderful.
06:12But one must also reach.
06:17Reaching is dissolution.
06:22There was a point and time when one was called.
06:32There was a point and time when one tried to create being here.
06:46And then this.
06:57What begins must gain completion.
07:13Nothing begins to remain begun.
07:19You would have heard of the way the Indians put it.
07:29Brahma, Vishnu and then Shiva.
07:33Shiva is taken as the highest.
07:40The highest not because he creates but because he dissolves.
07:45Shiva has no interest in creation.
07:48He prepares the ground for creation. How?
07:54By flattening everything that was ever created.
08:01Rishikesh is the city of Shiva.
08:09It is the city of ending.
08:13This Ganga symbolically rises from the forehead of Shiva.
08:24There are so many other cities for beginning, commencing.
08:37Come here to stop.
08:44Rishikesh must not become another beginning.
08:49We have so many beginnings.
08:55You need a new book, it is a new beginning.
09:00A new woman, it is a new beginning.
09:03You watch a new movie, it is a new beginning.
09:06So many beginnings.
09:09Things must end somewhere.
09:16There is no better place to end than Rishikesh.
09:20You have been through Brahma and Vishnu.
09:30Now it is your time to meet Shiva.
09:35Which is alright because only after having gone through the various gods and goddesses, you ultimately come to Shiva.
09:48But Rishikesh remains meaningless, right?
09:54If you meet this, that, this god, that goddess, that swami, that guru and you don't meet Shiva.
10:02Shiva is annihilation.
10:04It is a full stop.
10:10In every full stop is a ground for infinite universes.
10:31This Ganga is symbolically a representation not of flow but of stillness.
10:43It comes from nowhere.
10:48That's why they say it comes from, it only means it comes from stillness, from nowhere.
10:54Nowhere means ceasing, stopping.
10:59Shiva does not quite like too much of Brahma and Vishnu.
11:19Do you know little bit of mythology? Have you heard of them?
11:22He treats them like infants.
11:27Myth has it that they sometimes come running to Shiva even to resolve their petty disputes.
11:37And then Shiva gives them a good bashing.
11:42All this business of beginning, beginning, coming, thinking, continuing, maintaining, existing.
11:56Shiva is alright with it. Till the time it is just a joke.
12:04The moment it becomes something serious, the moment it becomes somebody's occupation or preoccupation.
12:16Then with one blink of the eye, Shiva says enough of it, go away.
12:38What Rishikesh? I am Rishikesh. Rishikesh means nothing. Nothing means Rishikesh.
12:48That's why I asked you, what is Rishikesh for you?
12:54If Rishikesh is anything for you, then you are keeping Shiva in abeyance.
13:00Then you are keeping Shiva waiting.
13:04Rishikesh must become nothing.
13:06When Rishikesh will be gone, then Shiva will be there.
13:28It's good that one comes.
13:34But so few people reach. They don't reach because they don't go away.
13:42So they keep coming. Reaching happens when you go away.
14:04Exactly the same.
14:06You see distinctions are a burden on the mind.
14:09If A is different from B, then one has to remember both A and B.
14:14It is wonderful when A to Z are all one.
14:17Then you can just remember A and forget everything else.
14:20And if A to Z all are nothing, then it is an even bigger relief.
14:27You need not remember anything. The mind is totally free.
14:34One mark of spirituality is not to create distinctions.
14:39Not to have anything extraordinary.
14:42You know this place you are sitting. It is designed to be extraordinary.
14:47What do you think? This is an ordinary table. No, it is not.
14:51What do you think? This is an ordinary light.
14:54Or this music. Do you think it is ordinary? None of it is ordinary.
14:58The Ganga was ordinary as long as it was natural.
15:02Now it is social.
15:04The Ganga that you are watching here, standing on top of it, is not Shiva's Ganga.
15:14It is society's Ganga.
15:16All of this is carefully designed to be spiritual.
15:24And spirituality does not come by design.
15:26This bulb is carefully designed.
15:31Who is this table?
15:35Down there in the cafe, there was one woman who was so, you know,
15:43wistfully looking at the Ganga, staring out from the window.
15:48And they were playing the sound of the flute, probably Krishna's flute.
15:58Maybe that is the implication.
16:00Now the woman is carrying an intensely spiritual expression on her face, looking at the Ganga.
16:08She is staring as if she is beholding God the father himself.
16:14Would she have stared or looked the same way had she not had the knowledge that this is Ganga?
16:24It is just the knowledge, the information that this is a particular holy river that is bringing that expression on her face.
16:32That she probably has some guru who will tell her that, you know, you just experienced Ananda.
16:39You know, you just got a glimpse of Moksha.
16:44That is rubbish. So fake, so artificial.
16:50Life is as natural as a dog, a horse, a snake or a rabbit.
17:07We even have designed wonderment.
17:11So you can sit by the Ganga in the night and look at her with great cultivated wonderment
17:23and convince yourself that you are getting a feel of the divine.
17:33And when you narrate that experience next day,
17:40in some spiritual setting where others too are listening,
17:49then you get credit for that.
17:52Ah! He experienced it.
17:54Or you missed out.
17:56Today you must also try out.
18:01It will be a pity to return empty handed from India.
18:07You must get some kind of divine experience.
18:14And so all the preparations have been made for the divine experience.
18:17Can you see?
18:22All these shops that are selling beads and kurta and stuff.
18:27Even the names of the cafes.
18:29There was one that said what?
18:31Buddha Momos, Little Buddha Cafe.
18:34Even the names are divine.
18:35Holi, Nirvana Cottage.
18:38Now how can you miss out on enlightenment?
18:42You bloody have to be enlightened.
18:46Have to have enlightenment.
18:51You would be forced to be enlightened.
18:54The smell of incense.
19:03You know it is pollution.
19:06It is making the air heavy.
19:09But if your mind is conditioned to think of something as holy,
19:14then you will say,
19:16Oh! The air is aromatic.
19:23It is not aromatic. It is polluted.
19:26Incense pollutes the air.
19:28And if you breathe a lot of it, then your lungs will rebel.
19:33Perhaps we can say that
19:47worldly life, worldly ambition is like heroin.
19:54And so-called spiritual life is like methadone.
20:04All go to just one place.
20:06Dopamine.
20:08The aim of all this, biologically, is just to activate that.
20:15And then you start feeling a little light and high.
20:21It is just that it is morally indefensible when it comes from drugs.
20:29And it is morally very acceptable when it comes from the gods.
20:59All of this is just a contrast to our urban lives.
21:10That is why initially it appears attractive.
21:13Yes, it does attract.
21:16I too experience that attraction.
21:18But that attraction is because it is a change from our regular patterns.
21:24But as we said in today's talk, in the change of patterns,
21:29the demand to be still in patterns is continuing.
21:36It is like a picnic, a holy picnic.
21:54Yes.
22:02If I may argue, it could be a picnic for many people.
22:09For example, a person like me, I get to meet other people who are burning.
22:17So I also start burning in the process.
22:20I am wet. I am still not ready to catch fire.
22:23So when I come in presence of people who are burning, it reflects on me.
22:28That is one of the main reasons.
22:29Last year I came to this place. I decided I will not come this year.
22:32But something got me here.
22:34I went to Tiruvannamalai a couple of times.
22:37That is my birthplace. That is my parental place.
22:40I have never been there in 50 years.
22:42But last year something took me there.
22:44And I went 2-3 times without any plan.
22:48This time also, suddenly before coming to Rishikesh, I had to go to Tiruvannamalai for some other reason.
22:53So I could visit the ashram and Arunachalai.
23:00I could do a pradakshina there.
23:02So Rishikesh also, you come and meet people who really make an impact on you in various ways.
23:13So there are some who are very quick to catch all these things.
23:20People like me who have been so conditioned over the years.
23:23It has been a struggle. It has happened automatically.
23:27But the struggle was there.
23:30The mind was always wanting to take control.
23:33And it is only through a process of 2-3 years that many things have gone.
23:39But still it is not gone.
23:40So the thing is, when you come to Rishikesh, you get to meet.
23:44For example, if I were not in Rishikesh, I would not have met you.
23:47I have read your blogs.
23:50Somebody, one of my mentees, is probably a follower of yours.
23:55So he had written to me and said, sir, you are great.
23:58So I have been following your blogs and other things.
24:01But it so happened that in Rishikesh, I got to meet you.
24:05It is just by grace.
24:07So I had not planned to meet you.
24:10When I came to Delhi, I never made this effort of reaching out to you.
24:14But it happened.
24:15So I think it is something which has got a divine plan.
24:18Because of which I am here and I got this opportunity to meet you.
24:23So I look at it like that.
24:25And all these other people probably have the same type of, many of them,
24:29who have the same type of a feeling.
24:33See, you look at little kids watching TV.
24:39What is happening to them?
24:41They are being impacted, influenced.
24:47You watch youngsters chasing role models.
24:56What is happening to them?
24:58They are being impacted.
25:01Are we not already sufficiently impacted?
25:06To be impacted is to be influenced, to be conditioned.
25:10Are we not sufficiently impacted already that we want more impacts?
25:16Would it not be more important to see that I am already so full of impacts, imprints, influences?
25:29Soiling, dirtying, that is one thing.
25:34Second thing is you said a wet man may come close to someone who is burning.
25:41And that rubs off some of the fire on him as well.
25:54Let us say nobody is here.
25:58But there is a general news that something burns here.
26:04So who is the first man who would come here?
26:12Let us say nobody is here, the city is vacant.
26:16But there is a belief, a widespread belief that something is burning here.
26:22Who would be the first man who would come here?
26:26Who is wet?
26:28Who is the next man who would come here?
26:32Who is again?
26:35Ultimately the city will be all full of wet people.
26:41Now who is burning?
26:42All those who are coming here are coming in expectation of the one who is burning.
26:47But who is burning?
26:49Who is burning?
26:52Ultimately it is just a huge crowd of all wet people expecting that there must be surely someone who is burning.
27:01But have you ever tried to figure out whether there is actually someone who is burning?
27:11Whether there is actually someone who is burning and actually means actually.
27:17Yes, I do get to meet people who are realized.
27:26How do you figure out that somebody is realized?
27:30There is no way of figuring out.
27:32But you must have because you are saying.
27:34You feel just as you feel that this is sweet.
27:41You feel just as you feel that a movie is obscene or wonderful.
27:47You feel just as you feel that it is time to marry or the time to set up a new business.
27:53It is something beyond that.
27:55It is something which actually comes from your heart.
28:01When you look at a person you can feel that.
28:04So if you do not.
28:05Maybe wrong.
28:07So your feeling is dependent on your looking.
28:11On my being with that person.
28:13So how do you be with somebody?
28:15It could be totally in silence.
28:17It could be that person is there somewhere.
28:19It could just be this.
28:21If the person is there somewhere then travelling is unnecessary.
28:27No, no, I am not talking about.
28:28You see I am not talking about very distant.
28:30It is about for example knowing a person.
28:32For example I came to Rishikesh.
28:34I met another person.
28:35He is a Swami.
28:37And he is very well read.
28:40Okay, let me ask you a question.
28:42Those who come here in search of holy people.
28:48Who are the holy people that they meet?
28:52They meet those holy people who have already been declared by the society as holy.
28:59Do you come to Rishikesh and meet a holy man?
29:04In a rickshaw puller?
29:06Yes, yes.
29:09And is that rickshaw puller not hailing from Barabanki or Patna?
29:18Why couldn't you meet him there?
29:22When we meet holy men.
29:23These are the holy men who have already been crowned as holy.
29:28So we have been conditioned to accept them as holy.
29:31Is holiness a matter of human certification?
29:35No, is it not a matter of faith?
29:38But find out.
29:39Look at the facts of this so called faith.
29:42No, it is coming from within.
29:43It may be coming from within.
29:44But I am again asking you.
29:47All the people who are coming here, where do you find them going?
29:50Where are they flocking to?
29:52See most people, what I have seen, most people come here for different pursuits.
29:57There are some people who are pursuing yoga.
29:59There are some people who are pursuing meditation.
30:01There are some people who are pursuing spirituality in a different way.
30:05Various paths.
30:06So there are so many paths and people from all over the world market come here.
30:11It is like a market place for various paths to spirituality or salvation.
30:22So they already know what they are coming here for?
30:24They are coming here because they have been told that you go there, you do this.
30:28And this particular shop.
30:30And that particular Swami.
30:32That particular Guruji.
30:34So it is a ready made holiness.
30:38It is a preordained divinity.
30:42Just as you have been told that that particular politician is wonderful.
30:46Or just as you have been told that the religion that one is born in is the best religion.
30:51Or that just as one is told that one's country is the most wonderful country.
30:57Told by someone else.
30:58Yes.
30:59So that's the initial portion.
31:00So they come and they have an experience.
31:03So if I already have been told, then what will be the quality of my experience?
31:08Won't it be a biased experience already?
31:11No, not necessarily.
31:12Many people here are typically coming with very conditioned minds who would evaluate from their minds.
31:20If they have their conditioned mind, why would they come here?
31:24They come here because deep within there is an expectation to find something here.
31:31And when there is an expectation to find something, you will find that whether or not it exists.
31:38When you are already convinced that something is here, then you will find it.
31:42So many best ones come with no expectations.
31:45If they have no expectations, then they won't come.
31:48No, no.
31:49They just want an experience.
31:50No, sir.
31:51I'll go again into what you are saying.
31:52What kind of experience do they want?
31:54Just to be here.
31:55A holy experience.
31:57Wait, wait, wait.
31:58Stay with me.
31:59Don't run.
32:00So if I am expecting a holy experience, I will get a holy experience.
32:07They get it.
32:08Yes, they get it.
32:09What is this expectation?
32:10No, no, no.
32:11What I am saying is that there is no transformation.
32:13They just go back with an experience.
32:15I am talking about people who get transformed.
32:17Yes.
32:18To get transformed, you cannot walk on a path laid out by you.
32:24No, no, no.
32:25I am not saying that they are walking on a path.
32:27By coming here, they are already walking on a path.
32:29Yes, that is experience this place.
32:32I am again asking you.
32:34So they want to have a holy experience here.
32:36They are not coming here for a political experience.
32:38So when you say I am coming here for a holy experience, you will get a holy experience.
32:43Even the ordinary bird will appear holy to you.
32:47If you are told that a particular land is the land of fairies, then even the ordinary girl there will look like a fairy to you.
32:53That's the same thing here.
32:55You have been told that people are burning here.
32:57So even the most wet of men will look as burning to you.
33:02In the real world, they are the most ordinary of people.
33:05Even lower than ordinary.
33:07Even more conditioned than you.
33:09But just because they are sitting on high pedestals and sitting in a so-called holy city, you start venerating them.
33:16You take them out to your own place.
33:20You take away their thrones from them.
33:23And what are they?
33:25What are they?
33:27But they have been kept afloat and kept lofted by people who come here hoping to have a holy experience.
33:37So they serve as the fulfillers of that hope.
33:41No, I don't know about other people, but some of the people I have met, they are really, what should I say?
33:49They are absolutely, you can see in their eyes, totally nothing else.
33:52You are wonderful, but what I am asking you is, why didn't you meet them in Calcutta?
33:57They didn't come to Calcutta.
34:00What do you think? Divinity is concentrated in a particular geography?
34:05No, I am not saying that.
34:06Then why didn't you meet them in Calcutta?
34:08I don't have an answer for this.
34:11You must have an answer, because it's a very important question.
34:14If you have the eye to see them, you will see them in Calcutta.
34:17And if you don't have the eye to see them, how are you seeing them in Rishikesh?
34:21It only means that you are just projecting and imagining.
34:24There is no greatness as such.
34:26Yes, it could be so.
34:30So, essentially, to be blunt, what I am saying is that we are wasting our time here.
34:34And if we are not wasting our time, then there is enough of divinity in Scotland or Calcutta also.
34:42The grass is equally green there.
34:45The water is Ganga there as well.
34:51Yes, absolutely.
34:52But there are certain, you know, when you think you are sort of going with your own control.
35:02At that time, you tend to do many things.
35:04And you hit roadblocks or you reach a situation which takes you to a different place.
35:09And then you are absolutely free.
35:11So, it is not that by choice, it is their choice that they will come and have this experience.
35:20It is everything that they have decided.
35:22In the process, something happens.
35:24To some people, I am not saying to all people.
35:26Some people, it happens.
35:27And they feel that that is grace.
35:30And then that grace must not be linked to their choice.
35:34Then that grace is happening irrespective of their choice.
35:40Right?
35:41And it could have happened anywhere.
35:42Yes.
35:43You could have met me anywhere.
35:44Yes.
35:45No, yes.
35:46So, this thing that I met you today with no plan, I didn't even expect to meet you today,
35:52has happened on its own.
35:53Yes, on its own.
35:54But then don't link it to Rishikesh.
35:55No, no, no.
35:56I am not saying Rishikesh.
35:57What I am saying is...
35:58Grace.
35:59Yes.
36:00Grace.
36:01Yes.
36:02Grace.
36:03Unreasonable grace.
36:04Without cause.
36:05Without cause.
36:06Without cause.
36:07It could have happened even without Rishikesh.
36:09Don't link it to this place.
36:10No.
36:11It could have...
36:12It's a different thing.
36:13I am talking about the reality.
36:14What I am saying is...
36:15It happened here.
36:16Yes.
36:17But you are missing out all that which is waiting to happen elsewhere.
36:20That I don't know.
36:23Ah!
36:24You must know.
36:25That is so important.
36:26Because there is a world waiting to open up in Calcutta for you.
36:30Calcutta is so holy.
36:32Yes, absolutely.
36:33Why are you missing out on the holiness?
36:34I am not...
36:35Ah!
36:36Then what are you doing here?
36:37No, no.
36:38This is what I am saying.
36:39I have come here for a purpose which I did not design.
36:43It came on its own and then my heart told me I have to be in Rishikesh.
36:46So, I came to Rishikesh.
36:47So, if one comes for general travel, just as one goes to any other city, then it is
36:53alright.
36:54It's wonderful.
