00:00The drama involving Chinese warships in the Tasman Sea has escalated with a second live firing drill this afternoon.
00:07It comes just a day after a similar incident in which passenger jets were forced to change course with little warning.
00:15Tonight the opposition and security experts are calling for a stronger response from the federal government.
00:22The Prime Minister on a pre-election campaign trail in must-win Tasmanian swing seats.
00:30But in waters east of the Apple Isle, Chinese ships in the Tasman threatening to upset the Pacific.
00:36This afternoon the Chinese Navy for the second day in a row advising of live firing activity.
00:42New Zealand's Defence Minister confirming their Navy observed live rounds being fired from the Chinese ship's gun.
00:50Foreign Minister Penny Wong raising concerns over yesterday's live fire drill alert meeting with her Chinese counterpart.
00:58Our meeting today also enables us to discuss again our expectations around safe and professional military conduct.
01:05I don't think we have a satisfactory answer from China as to the question of the notice.
01:10Last week a Chinese jet released flares just metres in front of an Australian surveillance plane.
01:16The same week the Defence Department made public that they were monitoring three Chinese warships sailing in the Coral Sea.
01:23Those ships made their way down the east coast yesterday forcing the diversion of passenger planes mid-flight

01:35Mild and diplomatic rebukes by the Australian government whenever one of these incidents happen

01:45I think what we've seen from the Prime Minister and his Defence Minister is a pattern of weakness over the last two years.
01:51They are in international waters, they are completely within the bounds of international law.
01:56Our own Prime Minister knocking back suggestions the government should impose any stronger rebukes like restrictions on trade.
