00:00This was the moment when CDU supporters heard the first prognosis based on exit polls for
00:05the federal election in Germany.
00:07The Christian Democrat Party and its candidate Friedrich Merz is expected to get around 28.5%
00:13of the votes, which will make them the strongest party in the newly elected Bundestag.
00:18Alternative for Germany, the far-right party, which no other group wants to collaborate
00:22with, is in second place with 20% of the votes.
00:25AFD followers also cheered and applauded in Berlin as exit poll results were read out.
00:31The exit polls also show German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left Social Democrats
00:35on track for their worst post-war result in a national parliamentary election.
00:40They are expected to finish in third place with 16.5%.
00:45Followed by the Greens with 12% and the far-left Linke with 9%.
00:49The liberal FDP and leftist BSW, both at 5%, a precarious position because if they slip
00:55under 5% after the actual count, they will not be represented in the Bundestag.
01:01But if they do, this might change the whole dynamic of the negotiations for the coalition.
