00:00I do not like Mac OS, or at least I think I don't,
00:04but the last time I made a genuine attempt to switch
00:07was 10 years ago.
00:09So even if Microsoft hadn't spent the last decade
00:12speed running the destruction of Windows,
00:14I would be way overdue for a bite out of Tim's Apple.
00:18So I'm doing it.
00:20After switching to the iPhone
00:21and honestly not really liking it, I'm doubling down.
00:25I am embracing Apple's philosophy,
00:27which is that if I'm not enjoying their product,
00:29it's probably because I haven't bought enough
00:32of their other products yet.
00:34So I need a MacBook for my commuter backpack
00:36and a Mac for my desk.
00:38And I will either discover
00:40why the heck people love these things so much,
00:42or I'll discover why they still only have 15% market share.
00:45But before I can do either of those things,
00:47which ones do I choose?
00:50That is where I come in.
00:51I have assembled a trough,
00:53I mean, a trove of apples behind us,
00:56and I have recruited a couple of Mac advisors
00:58to help him make the right decision.
01:00And there's stakes?
01:01Stakes, what stakes?
01:03Oh, yes, the stakes.
01:04At the end of this video,
01:05you don't get to just take something off of the table.
01:08You have to pull out your credit card
01:10and buy the exact spec of what we decide
01:12is going to be best for you.
01:14Then you get to exclusively use your Macs for a month
01:16and see how it goes.
01:18Oh, so no pressure then.
01:20Well, fine, but if I have to waste money on a Mac,
01:23then they have to waste time hearing this message
01:25from our sponsor, Hetzner.
01:27They're expanding their offerings with object storage,
01:30high-performance, scalable, S3-compatible solutions
01:33that can keep your unstructured data secure.
01:35Get access to their cloud servers using our link
01:38and enter code LTT25 to save $20 today.
01:42Let's start things off with the dark horse option,
01:53the iPad Pro.
01:55In fairness to him,
01:56the performance really is very close to a MacBook.
01:59It even uses the same 10-core M4 processor,
02:02which is kind of incredible when you look at this thing,
02:05but the processing isn't even the real reason
02:08you'd want one.
02:09The real reason is the display.
02:11This is a 13-inch tandem OLED panel
02:14that goes up to 1,600 nits,
02:17and it's one of the best displays we have ever seen,
02:20just period.
02:21The brightness combined with those perfect blacks
02:23of the OLED makes visuals pop in a way
02:25that pretty much nothing else can.
02:27Except for one small problem.
02:28I'd be stuck with iPad OS,
02:30not to mention the stupid ergonomics.
02:33So tell you what, you can take one of these,
02:36but I'm more interested in a real laptop.
02:39You know, the kind that fits on a lap.
02:42Yeah.
02:43So wait, am I switching too?
02:45I don't see why you should make me switch
02:47and you shouldn't have to.
02:48Because originally, like, I was okay with that,
02:50but now we're in February
02:51and the cool laptops are coming out.
02:53Should've thought of that before you pushed this video.
02:56Looking at Apple's Air and Pro MacBooks then,
02:59there are a few key things to consider,
03:01with one being performance.
03:03Apple's lineup is a cluster right now.
03:06So depending on which shell you prefer,
03:08your processor choices might be limited
03:11not to the latest CPUs,
03:13but rather to a generation or even two generations ago.
03:16For my use case though,
03:17which is mostly word processing and Google Docs,
03:20performance is not a major consideration
03:22and there weren't any major efficiency gains
03:25in terms of battery life,
03:26going from the M3 to the M4.
03:29Not to mention that the weight and thinness
03:31of a MacBook Air is also very appealing.
03:34But there are some areas where the Pro clearly pulls ahead.
03:38For me, the Pro models could make more sense.
03:41Even configured with the same CPU,
03:43they have better cooling,
03:44enabling them to turbo for much longer.
03:46For all the solid works you'll be doing.
03:49Apparently it works great now.
03:50What, really?
03:51Yeah, in parallels.
03:52You just have to spend a hundred bucks on getting that.
03:55That's the Mac way.
03:57You can do anything you want.
03:58Just gotta spend.
03:59Regardless of what kind of work we're doing,
04:00we'll be doing it on a liquid retina display.
04:03But it's worth noting that that marketing term
04:05doesn't actually tell us that much about the performance.
04:08On the Air, it only goes to 500 nits peak brightness,
04:1160 Hertz.
04:12While on the Pro, it'll do up to 120 Hertz
04:16and up to 1600 nits for incredible visuals.
04:19That is everywhere other than the camera notch.
04:22Another problem for the Air are the ports.
04:25You get two Thunderbolt 4 ports,
04:26MagSafe and a headphone jack.
04:29That is it.
04:30On the Pro, there isn't a whole lot more,
04:32but the additional Thunderbolt port, SD card reader,
04:34and in particular, the HDMI 2.1 port
04:37are very, very welcome.
04:39On the topic of HDMI output,
04:41I rarely plug more than one external display into my laptop,
04:45but if you need more,
04:46your mileage may vary depending on the CPU you use.
04:50You realize you're gonna have to put this down
04:51at some point and pick one, right?
04:52I know, but it's just like Surface Laptop Bad Edition here.
04:59I don't think there's any option
05:00other than the Air for me.
05:02I kinda want the Air.
05:03I'm just really concerned about the cooling
05:05because I'm guessing SolidWorks probably runs inefficiently.
05:09Yeah.
05:09And I think after like five to 10 minutes,
05:12this thing will just be hitting thermal limits
05:15and not able to do it.
05:17Well, not only that, but the skin temperature
05:18is probably not gonna be dangerous
05:20because Apple makes sure that it isn't,
05:22but what it won't be is great.
05:24Yeah.
05:25I don't even know if I want from a bigger one.
05:27I don't know, the 15's pretty nice.
05:29Oh no.
05:31How much more is it though?
05:33I don't wanna spend any more on this than I have to, Alex.
05:36Fair enough.
05:37Yeah, this seems fine.
05:3816 gigs unified memory, 256 gigs SSD.
05:41Sure.
05:42Yeah, how much faster is an M3?
05:44Because everything I've heard,
05:45people are just pretty happy with their M-series silicon,
05:48regardless of what generation it is these days.
05:50Yeah, not much.
05:51I'm just gonna get the M2.
05:53A thousand US dollars is enough to spend on a machine
05:55that I don't even want.
05:56How about you?
05:57Are you gonna consider pricing at all?
05:58Or because we're not buying you one,
06:00are you just gonna grab whatever you want off the table?
06:02Yeah, I think it's just gonna be this one.
06:04Is this an M2 or an M3?
06:05I think it's an M2.
06:07Oh, okay.
06:08So conveniently, this is basically what I'm getting.
06:10Yeah.
06:12Of course, we're not done.
06:14I'm also gonna need a desktop or two.
06:17So let's kick things off with a classic, the iMac,
06:20which, man, Alex, I know you wrote up a whole bit
06:23about this thing, but let's be realistic.
06:26These small screen, limited IO,
06:28non-upgradable e-waste machines
06:30are aimed at the kinds of folks
06:31who desire beauty over functionality,
06:33which, let's face it, I am not.
06:37So why don't we move on to something
06:40a little more practical, the new Mac mini.
06:44I am a huge fan of this little beast,
06:46and it was actually the inspiration
06:49for us bringing back this series.
06:51Our unit here has an M4 chip with a 10-core CPU,
06:55a 10-core GPU, and 16 gigs of unified memory.
06:58And I don't know what impresses me more about it,
07:01the performance, the size, or the cost.
07:04For just $600, this petite pom
07:07offers a shocking value proposition.
07:09It takes up virtually no space,
07:11and it is darn near silent doing it.
07:14However, that value proposition drops off sharply
07:17as soon as you need more storage or memory.
07:20Here we are.
07:21I don't think I need the M4 Pro,
07:22so these are my base options,
07:24but I also don't wanna pay extra for storage.
07:27I'm gonna be using 10-gig networking
07:29for all of my storage,
07:30because this is gonna be a work machine.
07:32So what I actually want is, oh my God,
07:34you don't even get double the RAM for $200?
07:38You get eight gigs of RAM for $200?
07:43It's like Apple took that observation that we made,
07:46that their memory and storage upgrades
07:48cost more per weight than literal gold,
07:50and they were like, we can do better.
07:55Ugh, 100 bucks for 10-gig, I don't even mind,
07:57but ugh, I don't wanna pay $200 for eight gigs of RAM.
08:0216 enough?
08:03I was using 15 gigs in Chrome tabs yesterday.
08:07I'm gonna get 24 gigs.
08:11$900.
08:14No, I'm not doing it.
08:15I'm over it, $700.
08:17There is good news though.
08:19You don't actually have to pay the exorbitant Apple tax
08:21for storage and memory if you know the right people.
08:24So get subscribed,
08:25because we plan on exploring upgrade abilities
08:28that some might consider to be unnatural,
08:31which could be particularly valuable
08:33for purebred tab hounds or, more realistically,
08:35AI developers who could easily blast through
08:38the Mac Mini's maximum 64 gigs of RAM,
08:41which brings us to the big boy, the Mac Pro.
08:47With 64 gigs of RAM as the starting configuration
08:51and a $7,000 starting price,
08:53the Mac Pro strikes fear into any workload
08:56and into the wallet of any YouTuber cringy enough
09:00to buy one as a flex.
09:01This particular specimen contains a comical 192 gigabytes
09:06of unified memory, a 24-core CPU, 76 GPU cores,
09:11and a 32-core neural engine,
09:14bringing the price to an eye-watering $9,600.
09:18I do have a question though.
09:20Given that this monster is still limited
09:22to M2 series chips,
09:25and our little tiny Mac Mini over here has an M4,
09:30how close are these in performance?
09:33Should we drag race them?
09:34Yeah.
09:36I'm team Mac Mini.
09:37Let's go.
09:38Three, two, one.
09:41There's no way.
09:42Realistically, I know the answer, but whatever.
09:45Performance per volume?
09:47Very high.
09:48And yeah, okay.
09:5024 cores still beats 10 cores,
09:53regardless of how much better those cores are.
09:55Absolute shocker.
09:57You know what else is shocking?
09:58It is Alex week.
10:00We have three exclusives on Floatplane
10:02centered around me to, well, celebrate myself.
10:05So check it out at lmg.gg slash alex25.
10:09Now, there is one notable Mac
10:11missing from our lineup here, the Mac Studio.
10:15Splitting the difference between the Mini
10:16and the not-so-Mini,
10:19you can option the Studio with the wild core counts
10:22and RAM capacities of the Pro,
10:24but just without the PCIe expansion slots.
10:27We do have a Mac Studio in the house,
10:29but we weren't able to steal it
10:31because Labs is using it for AI stuff, which makes sense.
10:34That is the powerful Mac desktop that makes any sense.
10:39Oh, now I pick one?
10:40This one.
10:42Easy.
10:43I didn't even need to look at that one.
10:43Oh, but because we didn't choose the iMac,
10:46I'm going to need a display as well.
10:48Wait, what?
10:49I have to choose an Apple display?
10:51This one, this is as low as the height adjust goes,
10:54and this one doesn't have any at all.
10:56Okay, well, you have to look at them at least.
10:57Oh.
10:59All right, well, first up is the non-display display,
11:02the Apple Vision Pro,
11:03which I could connect to my laptop or my desktop
11:06and then project a screen or screens,
11:09now that it's been updated, anywhere around my office,
11:12which sounds pretty great,
11:14except that I typically need to work longer
11:17than one hour at a time,
11:19and if I spend longer than that in the Vision Pro,
11:21it gives me a splitting headache.
11:22I also can't be arriving on set
11:24with goggle marks all over my face,
11:26so I think we'll have to move on.
11:28To the studio display.
11:30At 27 inches with 5K resolution and 600 nit-peak brightness,
11:34this is a pretty darn nice monitor,
11:36or at least it was.
11:39In 2025, though, it's pretty difficult to stomach
11:42the $1,600 asking price for specs like that,
11:45especially when a height-adjustable stand
11:47brings the price up to $2,000.
11:50But hey, why try to stomach $2,000 for this
11:54when you can projectile vomit $5,000 at Apple
11:58for the Pro Display XDR?
12:01Okay, maybe I'm getting a bit hung up on the price here,
12:03but come on, I'm still not over the fact
12:06that the stand for this monitor alone costs $1,000.
12:11With that said, there is a lot to like here.
12:14Its 1,600 nit-peak brightness is enough
12:16for not just an impactful HDR experience,
12:19but conceivably enough to master HDR content on it,
12:23and its 6K resolution allows you
12:26to have a full-resolution 4K video
12:29with plenty of pixels left over
12:30for your timeline and your media bin.
12:32Of course, I'm not a professional video editor,
12:35just a professional video reviewer,
12:37so what about, oh goodness, a third option,
12:41the display that I already use on my desk at work,
12:44the ASUS PG42U.
12:46Although the resolution is just 4K
12:49and the peak brightness tops out at just 1,000 nits,
12:54not to mention that it has its own issues
12:55with respect to height adjust and stand maneuverability,
12:58in every other conceivable way,
13:00it wins over Apple's offerings.
13:02It's OLED for perfect blacks,
13:04it has 138 hertz refresh rate for snappy navigation,
13:07is way bigger to help with multitasking,
13:10oh, and it costs barely more than the fucking stand
13:14for the Pro Display XDR.
13:16Like, I know this isn't an Apple product,
13:17but I'm guessing that the vast majority of Mac mini buyers
13:21are not gonna be eviscerating their wallets for a display.
13:25It's just so hilarious.
13:26If you want excellent display from Apple at a fair price,
13:29they're very happy to sell it to you.
13:31You just have to be okay
13:32with having a laptop attached to it.
13:36On that note, I guess it's time to head to apple.com
13:39and order the laptop I'll be loading
13:41into my commuter backpack, lttstore.com.
13:44All right, let's get on with this.
13:45$2,500.
13:47Do you know how much of a single GPU that could buy for me?
13:52I mean, most of it.
13:53Actually makes it sound like a deal.
13:54I'm getting two whole computers for less than a 50, 90.
13:58Place your order.
13:59You do a lot less gaming though.
14:01Actually, realistically, I'll just be playing Bellatra,
14:03so like, whatever.
14:04There it is.
14:05Great.
14:06Hey, look, my Apple Watch says they're processing my order.
14:10It's gonna be interesting to see his perspective
14:12since he doesn't have an iPhone and doesn't have a watch.
14:15He's not ecosystemed at all.
14:17No.
14:19Not stoked.
14:21Charge.
14:22While iPhones are known for their battery efficiency,
14:24it helps to have some backup power on the go,
14:27especially if you're the YouTube or Netflix binging type.
14:30With Charge's IceMag 2,
14:32you get Qi2 certified 15 watt charging,
14:34a multi-angle foldable kickstand for your viewing pleasure,
14:37a 10,000 milliamp hour battery,
14:39and most importantly, of course, that sweet, sweet RGB.
14:43You also don't have to worry
14:44about the battery bank getting too hot.
14:46It lives up to its name thanks to an active cooling fan
14:49and full aluminum alloy backplate.
14:50And for those situations where you need a quick top-up,
14:52you can break out a trusty USB-C cable
14:54for 30 watts of wired charging power.
14:56You never know when you might need some extra juice,
14:58so use our link today and grab a Charge IceMag 2.
15:02Better safe than sorry.
15:03If you guys enjoyed this video,
15:04maybe check out the one where Alex and I
15:06switched to Snapdragon laptops for a month,
15:09or in my case, much longer than a month.
15:13Yeah, neither of us switched back.
15:14We'll see what happens with these apples.
