00:00All right, I know what you're thinking, why on earth would anyone be in Blackpool in January?
00:11It's because we're at this place, Harry Ramsden's. It's a British institution, been operating
00:16since 1928, and they've got a food challenge here. Hey, all right, man. A hotbed of Beard
00:23Meets Food fandom here in Blackpool. We're right beneath the Blackpool Tower, actually.
00:29Look at the big erection. Look at that. Absolutely heathen.
00:43You know, the interesting thing about this particular food challenge is it was arguably
00:47made famous by Roy Keane's autobiography, because he tells a story about when he's playing
00:52for Ireland and Jack Charlton was the manager, and the day before one of the games, apparently,
00:56allegedly took him to a Harry Ramsden's to take on the fish and chips challenge the
01:00day before they played an international match.
01:03Keane claims that under Jack Charlton, the players were taken to Harry Ramsden's before
01:07the game against Austria. The mission, to complete Harry's challenge. A giant sized
01:12haddock and chips with pudding to follow.
01:15And Roy Keane was not best pleased about that.
01:17Really?
01:18Because naturally, it's probably not the most sensible preparation for 90 minutes of vigorous
01:23physical activity. The last time I ate Harry Ramsden's, I was about eight years old. So
01:29you know, about 10 years ago. I'm only joking. Are you ready for some Harry Ramsden's history
01:35here?
01:36Harry Ramsden's is a fast food restaurant chain based in the United Kingdom, which offers
01:39fish and chips and assorted themed dishes founded by restaurant entrepreneur Harry Ramsden
01:45in Gaisley, which is actually a Leeds postcode in West Yorkshire in 1928.
01:52Now I follow you, but you don't follow me and I've got nearly 2 million followers.
01:58Oh yeah? 2 million?
02:01Yes!
02:02What do you do?
02:03I'm TikTok, yeah.
02:04Oh God, I don't use that thing.
02:07I've discovered what's in the challenge. It's 1.5 kilos of fish and chips, two battered
02:13sausages, six chicken bites, three sides, mushy peas, gravy and curry sauce. I would
02:18argue gravy and curry sauce are condiments or sauces, as implied by the name, not really
02:23sides, but also two gherkins and you have 30 minutes to finish it.
02:27There you are.
02:29Oh, thank you very much.
02:32You're more than welcome.
02:33Get that.
02:34Oh, you dare!
02:36Hey, it works both ways. You don't get to film and not get filmed in return.
02:41All right, so we're at Harry Ramsden's today in Blackpool, where we're taking on their
02:45giant fish and chips challenge. You've got to eat basically everything here, apart from
02:48the lemon wedges, and you have to do it in 30 minutes, right?
02:5130 minutes, yeah.
02:52How much does it cost?
02:53£35.99.
02:54£35.99, but if you do it in 30 minutes, it's free.
02:57That's right.
02:58Do you get a t-shirt?
02:59You do get a t-shirt.
03:01Great.
03:02So, ready, steady, go!
03:05We've got ready, steady, go.
03:12Come on, beard!
03:15Come on, beard!
03:19It's a big ask, it's a big ask for 30 minutes.
03:22We'll see.
03:25It's a ginormous sausage, yeah.
03:30The thing about this one is the sauces are actually included, so you have to finish the sauces.
03:35Try a little gravy.
03:36I've never really been a big fan of gravy on bat and fish, but it is something they
03:40do in the North, so I should really be into it.
03:45Quite accurately, she just said it's more exciting when you watch it on TV.
03:48You're right.
03:50The fish is delicious.
03:52It's really good fish.
03:55It's mad that we're in a room that's got two famous TikTokers in it.
04:04Five minutes down, Ollie.
04:05Five.
04:06The fish is, by gum, you've done well there.
04:10What's them balls in corner?
04:12Fried chicken balls, I think.
04:14Let's eat some of these chicken balls.
04:18These chicken balls are good.
04:19You can't even get from a high-level Chinese takeaway.
04:23Good luck.
04:27What do you think about the fight that broke out at Harry Osmond's?
04:31Turns out the fish got battered.
04:37Don't give in.
04:38She's intense, I can't lose now.
04:40Is she going to beat me up?
04:41This is the first time you've brought your mum to a food fight.
04:45Right, chips.
04:49I have quite a famous disdain for chips.
04:53The chips are actually pretty good.
04:55They're crispy on the outside but kind of still fluffy in the middle,
04:58which is really the only way you should enjoy a chip.
05:04How long has he got left?
05:0621 minutes.
05:08Is he going to do it?
05:09I don't know.
05:12He hasn't even got no belly.
05:16I'm waiting until I stand up afterwards.
05:19I reckon he'll hide his battered sausage behind his beard for us
05:22so he doesn't have to eat it.
05:25Never heard that one before.
05:28I hesitate to say because it sounds really dramatic,
05:30but I think these might be the best chips I've ever had.
05:33Because I really don't like chips, right?
05:35But these taste really good.
05:37Especially since fish and chip shop chips are normally undercooked, I find.
05:40But these are spot on, absolutely perfect.
05:44I don't know why Joaquin was complaining.
05:47Do me a favour.
05:51I can't bear to look at what he's eating.
05:54You don't think you could do it?
05:55I could eat that in a week.
05:57Does he have to even eat the scraps?
05:59Yeah, everything.
06:01He's got another big sausage there.
06:04I keep forgetting, you know, that the sauces are included
06:06so I probably should have utilised these a little bit more sensibly.
06:11I saw a couple of people comment last year saying using Diet Coke is cheating,
06:15so although I don't agree,
06:17I'm going to try and do this one without any supplementary Diet Coke.
06:21Oh, you're going to miss the grand finale.
06:23I know, we've got to go.
06:24Britain's Got Talent is calling.
06:28Well done.
06:30The hard part of this is going to be mopping up all the scraps.
06:32I left one of the fried sausages to the end.
06:35This is really good, thank you very much.
06:38I wouldn't normally do this.
06:47Pickle.
06:50You say a pickle is a traditional ingredient,
06:52an accompaniment to fish and chips?
06:56I'm not complaining, I love pickles,
06:57but you don't normally find them on fish and chips.
07:03You've taken more pictures than the guy I'm paying here to take pictures.
07:09Bye-bye.
07:11Just the sausage to go.
07:15I'll tell you what, man, the tartar sauce was yummy.
07:18All right, this has been Mixed Food,
07:20and that was Ari Ramsden's infamous giant fish and chip challenge.
07:34Nine minutes, 30 seconds left.
07:36So well done, really well done.
07:38Thank you very much.
07:40Do you have a dessert menu?
07:41Yes, of course.
07:44You've got to get dessert, thank you very much.
07:46Oh yeah, thank you.
07:49You probably don't want to shake.
07:51Nice to meet you both.
07:55It's nice to meet you both, have a nice day.
07:56That was actually really good, man.
07:58The fish and chips were really good.
07:59Could I get the Eton Mess,
08:01and could I try some of the apple pie as well?
08:04With the custard or ice cream?
08:06Custard, please.
08:07Eton Mess.
08:08That's pretty big.
08:10And apple pie with custard.
08:11Thank you very much.
08:13I probably didn't need to get two.
08:14That feels a little bit performative, that, yeah.
08:21That was harder than I thought it was going to be.
08:24I broke my teeth.
08:25That's a winning prize.
08:27I blasted teeth with it.
08:30Thank you very much.
08:31You're more than welcome, enjoy it.
08:34Sitting pretty heavy like that.
08:35It tasted good.
08:36Maybe the two desserts was not the best choice.
08:40You get the walk-off shot.
08:4950-50 chances.
09:04I hope you've got sauce on your back.
09:06It's a suspicious-looking colour as well.
09:08Interesting creamy shade.
09:09What kind of sauce is it?
09:10I don't know, let's have a taste.
09:12I guess I'm filming B-roll at Kitchen, that's why.
