Flack influenced the contemporary R&B subgenre called quiet storm, and covered songs by singer-songwriters such as Leonard Cohen and members of the Beatles. Flack was the first artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year two years in a row: "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" won in 1973 and "Killing Me Softly with His Song" won in 1974. Flack died at her home, surrounded by her family, on February 24, 2025 at the age of 88.
