00:00How has the news gone down in Berlin and when could we see Frederick Merz announced as the
00:07Chancellor?
00:08Yeah, that's right Leanne.
00:09The pollsters seemingly in this election were bang on the money with their prediction that
00:14the CDU would not only win the election but also garner around 30% of the vote.
00:19Frederick Merz last night very quick out of the gates to claim victory saying he had a
00:23mandate now to try and form a government but he still doesn't have a majority in its outright
00:29and that is not uncommon here.
00:31That's a bit of a quirk of the German system that not just one party will form a majority
00:36on its own.
00:37Coalition talks always necessary and we understand he is now locked in those negotiations with
00:43the Social Democrats from the centre-left.
00:45It might seem unusual for a conservative in a centre-left party to partner together on
00:50a grand coalition but it is not uncommon here.
00:53It's certainly how former Chancellor Angela Merkel governed throughout much of her 16
00:58years in office.
00:59The next steps really are for the two parties to go through their respective policies and
01:03manifestos they took to the election.
01:05Compromises will have to be made, certain agendas will have to be dropped and then of
01:09course you have the question of which politicians will become ministers and take over certain
01:15ministries.
01:16All of that happening right now.
