00:00All right, we're going to take you over to London now, where Foreign Affairs Minister
00:02Melanie Jolie is reacting to U.S. President Donald Trump saying tariffs will go forward
00:07next week on Canada and Mexico following that 30-day pause.
00:10Let's take a listen here.
00:11So, thank you, Mackenzie.
00:13I haven't been briefed on the latest comments by President Trump, but when it comes to tariffs,
00:19we know that there are three executive orders that are focusing on Canada, but also on other
00:26allies.
00:27So, one is linked to March 4th pause, and it is linked to a border in Fentanyl, and
00:33it is targeting Mexico and us.
00:36The second is about aluminum and steel, and that's basically with all trading partners
00:45exporting steel and aluminum to the U.S.
00:49And the third executive order is linked to reciprocal tariffs, and that's also for a
00:56deadline of April 1st, and it is affecting every single trading partner.
01:03So, my point is, we need to be able to deal with the unpredictability of President Trump.
01:10We need to be aware that the threat of tariffs is a real one and may continue for a while.
01:17And meanwhile, we need to stand strong and send a clear message that Canadians will fight
01:23back, and that's what we'll do.
01:28Is it the government's expectation that we will not be able to get out of the tariffs
01:33and we're operating on the assumption that when the various deadlines come that you've
01:36mentioned that the tariffs will come into force?
01:40I think that we have to be ready for all scenarios, and what Canadians can trust is that I will
01:48always be there to tell them the truth, and not only that, to make sure that ultimately
01:55we're ready and that we come up with a strong reaction.
01:58You know, Mackenzie, what is important to remember is Canada is the only country on
02:02Earth that actually decided to come up with such a strong response of $155 billion worth
02:11of tariffs against the U.S., and we were the only ones saying exactly what we would do
02:16with that first tranche of tariffs of $30 billion.
02:20And why am I saying that is since we're not the only ones under the threat of tariffs,
02:26this is exactly why I'm here right now in the U.K. and I've been in Europe now for 10 days.
02:33It is important that allies under that threat work together and work as a coalition by having
02:41the same types of counter measures, of counter tariffs.
02:45And so that's what I've done in Paris, in London, in also Munich, in Germany, and also
02:52in Brussels, and I'll continue to do that.
02:55Next question will go to Tonda McCharles.
02:57Hi, Tonda.
02:59Hi, Minister.
03:01I just want to circle back, though, to Mackenzie's question.
03:06This weekend, the Prime Minister and the President spoke, and so I want to know what the current
03:12Canadian government's understanding of Trump's position is on these tariffs.
03:17Have you been told, as he said publicly today, that they're going ahead on schedule?
03:25And at one point he pivoted to talk about reciprocal tariffs, but he was answering a
03:29very direct question on Canada.
03:31So what's your current understanding?
03:34My understanding is that over the weekend, indeed, Prime Minister Trudeau and President
03:39Trump spoke.
03:40They mainly spoke about Ukraine and mainly spoke about the conversation they had today
03:45in the context of the G7 leaders' meeting, while Prime Minister Trudeau and also President
03:53von der Leyen and others were in Ukraine, and President Trump participated, and they
04:00had a constructive conversation.
04:03Now the issue of reciprocal tariffs is one that is affecting every single country having
04:09a trading relationship with the U.S., and on January 20th, President Trump signed an
04:15executive order asking all federal agencies to come up with a study of the trade relationship
04:23that the U.S. has with its trading partners.
04:26So it is consistent with the executive orders he has signed, and we don't agree that the
04:35relationship is actually not a win-win.
04:39We think that actually the U.S. is benefiting greatly from our relationship, but at the
04:46same time, we will defend Canadian jobs, we will absolutely fight back, and we'll be there
04:52to defend Canada's and Canadians' way of living, period.
04:57So can I just clarify then, I get that the conversation was mostly about Ukraine, but
05:03did the Prime Minister ask or get any indication from President Trump which way he's leaning
05:10on the Canadian-specific tariffs, the deadline for which is March 4th?
05:16So the Prime Minister indeed referred to all the good work we were doing at the border,
05:22and when you're referring to March 4th, you're referring to that executive order linked to
05:27the border, and so we got positive feedback from many American officials regarding the
05:36fact that we have done the work.
05:39I must say also that the U.S. is a net exporter of fentanyl to Canada, a net exporter of illegal
05:46guns to Canada, and a net exporter of illegal migrants coming to Canada.
05:51So at the same time, while we understand that there is a real preoccupation on the part
05:56of President Trump, we are doing the work at the border for us, because we know that
06:02we need to have a strong and secure border to protect our people in our country.
06:07All right.
06:08Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie speaking there in the U.K., and of course, the topic
06:12that, of course, they're talking about quite directly is March 4th and those tariffs on
06:17all goods, we know, on March 12th, of course, with regards to aluminum and steel.
06:20Will that come into effect?
06:22The minister asked a couple of times as to whether or not in that conversation that Prime
06:25Minister Justin Trudeau had with Donald Trump over the weekend, whether that came up.
06:30Not really sort of a direct answer, but did say that Canada will respond back as Canada
06:35and its allies, which is why she is in the U.K. and has met with other leaders across
06:40Europe to say there needs to be a concerted effort in terms of how we respond to these
06:44tariffs coming from the United States.
06:46But you heard there from Minister Jolie saying Canada will stand strong, they will fight
06:49back with those reciprocal tariffs.
06:52She said that we are ready with all scenarios and will be here to fight for Canadian businesses
06:56and for Canadian jobs, mentioning, of course, those $155 billion worth of tariffs coming
07:01against the United States, those reciprocal tariffs, and saying Canada will fight back
07:05quite directly.
07:07So no direct response in terms of whether there is that guarantee for those tariffs
07:11to be enforced as of March 4th.
07:13You heard from President Trump earlier in that press conference with President Emmanuel
07:18Macron.
07:19He was asked about this, saying that things will go forward.
07:20But, of course, we will be—we're still, I'd say, in a wait-and-see situation as we
07:25count the days to when that is happening next week.
