What was meant to be a diplomatic meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy turned into a public verbal spat, in front of world media. Instead of building ties and focusing on Ukraine’s reconstruction, the meeting shifted as Trump and Vice President JD Vance accused Zelenskyy of not showing enough gratitude for U.S. aid.

European leaders responded, reaffirming their support for Ukraine. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron were the first to back Zelenskyy, with Starmer vowing to work toward peace and Macron condemning Russia as the aggressor.

Russia welcomed the apparent shift in U.S. policy. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov remarked that Washington’s “rapidly changing” foreign policy was now “largely in line with our vision.” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova was even more pointed, calling Zelenskyy’s visit to Washington a “complete political and diplomatic failure of the Kyiv regime.”
