00:00Not too long ago, President Trump commented that he wanted to buy Greenland,
00:04something which sparked controversy around the globe.
00:06It was a conversation that dwindled amongst the myriad other controversies that have
00:10overtaken political conversation in the wake of the administration's other divisive policies.
00:15However, during the State of the Union, it has come up once again.
00:19We also have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland.
00:23And if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America.
00:27He added that he supports the right of Greenland to choose,
00:29but added this at the end of his remarks.
00:32And I think we're going to get it one way or the other. We're going to get it.
00:38Trump says that his interests are for national and international security.
00:42And it's true that with large swaths of ice melting in the Arctic near Greenland,
00:45nations like Russia and China have begun to have an increased presence there.
00:49Greenland is also home to rare earth mineral deposits.
00:52But can he do it even with billions or trillions of dollars?
00:55Well, probably not. Large land purchases,
00:58a la the US buying of Alaska from Russia in 1867, are just not part of international politics anymore.
