00:07The effects of coffee start even before you take a sip, reports The Guardian.
00:11One 2019 study found that inhaling its scent can improve memory and stimulate alertness.
00:18OK, now you take a sip, and your world is entirely better.
00:22Yes, the placebo effect.
00:24But caffeine won't kick in until around 45 minutes after that sip.
00:28Let's talk about caffeine.
00:30Simply put, it fools your nerve cells to prevent you from feeling sleepy or drowsy.
00:35After a cup of joe, you're now alerted, and dopamine is running wild.
00:39Phenomenal, right?
00:40Unless you overdo it, high doses can turn that mood boost into anxiety.
00:45Caffeine has a half-life of about 6 hours, so stopping its consumption around 2-3pm seems
00:50reasonable to wind down and go to bed.
00:53Of course, that doesn't mean you should go wild in the morning.
00:56Three coffees back-to-back in the morning can have you at around 1,000 to 1,500 milligrams
01:01of caffeine before lunchtime.
01:04The goal is no big ups and downs, a balance.
01:07Hopkins Medicine says you can't have too much of a good thing.
01:11That's when the jitters come in, the increased heart rate, high blood pressure, anxiety,
01:16and restlessness at night.
01:17According to the Mayo Clinic, most adults should drink no more than 400 milligrams of
01:21caffeine a day, roughly four cups of brewed coffee.
