00:00Angie Stone who we just lost. God bless her, may she rest in peace. Love and condolences to her family and everyone she was close to. I was sad to hear.
00:13What do you think her legacy is in music?
00:17She's become one of the greatest soul singers ever in R&B from not just her vocal style but just her presence, what she meant to music in general, her beautiful, strong, smoky voice and her energy.
00:37I won't lie and say that I knew her because in passing we would run into each other.
00:45She did a few shows here and there.
00:46She was always a very sweet and wonderful human being. God bless her and may she rest in peace.
00:52Some of the powerful words she said recently before she passed was kind of aligned with what you guys' mission on Capitol Hill was.
01:01It's an uphill battle but we have to understand that the industry was founded on criminal activity. The music industry was pretty much ushered in by gangsters.
01:19The practices of the music industry is gangster-esque and always has been. It's no coincidence that you see a lot of labels, especially hip-hop, simulating gangster shit.
01:36That's what the music industry has always been. Just like you mentioned, we were in Congress trying to get a bipartisan bill passed so that artists can get paid when their songs get played on the radio.
01:50Which sounds ridiculous.
01:52It's stupid. It just makes no sense that we're fighting for something that you would think would be a no-brainer.
01:58Not even out of gratis but just sheer, earnest work.
02:05These are the things that we fight for and Angie was one of those fighters for us and for record deals and just artists getting their fair share.
02:19It shouldn't be this way and I understand a lot of people say, well it's not about what's fair, it's what you sign.
02:24Yeah, but also being in contracts from the past in the beginning where our deals was in favor.
02:31It just causes animosity and it causes grief and no one likes to work for free. No one likes to work and still be broke.
02:42It's weird that there are artists like us in the past that would sell millions of records and we were still living in the hood.
02:49So that's wrong and it should be fought for. So thank you Angie for fighting for us.
