Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability, including multiple coup attempts. Embalo himself has survived two in the last three years, most recently in December 2023, which led to the dissolution of parliament.

00:00Guinea-Bissau's President Umar Osisoko Mbalo announced his intention to seek a second term
00:05in November despite ongoing tension with an opposition that does not recognize his presidency.
00:13On Monday, after returning from a trip to Moscow on February 26th, Mbalo spoke to reporters
00:19at the airport in Bissau confirming his candidacy.
00:24In the meantime, a delegation from the West African Regional Organization, ECOWAS, which
00:29was sent to Guinea-Bissau to help address the political crisis, left on Monday after
00:35reportedly facing threats of expulsion from Mbalo.
00:40Mbalo has announced that the election will take place on November 30th and intends to
00:46remain in office until that day.
00:50Opposition leaders have indicated they will organize large-scale protests and strikes
00:54but are currently waiting to assess the success of the ECOWAS mission.
