00:00It's tough to imagine a world without Burger King.
00:03For over 60 years, the company has provided cheap and filling food to hundreds of millions
00:07of customers across the globe.
00:09Here are a few things you probably don't know, or don't remember, about this American favorite.
00:13Break out the burners, cause we grillin' this dog my way.
00:17Bikinis, martinis, zucchinis, yeah, you know the rest.
00:22The Whopper sacrifice
00:23In 2009, Burger King created a one-off app which awarded users a coupon for a free Whopper.
00:29They deleted 10 people from their friends list.
00:31Oh, and the app also sent a message to the friends you deleted, informing them that you
00:35valued their friendship at less than one-tenth of a Whopper from Burger King.
00:39Facebook shut the app down after only 10 days, claiming it was a massive violation of their
00:43users' privacy.
00:44In that time, however, the app had already been installed on almost 60,000 accounts.
00:4820,000 of those got their free Whoppers, while 200,000 more people were force-fed a hefty
00:53dose of reality.
00:55Burger King vs. Burger King
00:57In 1952, Gene and Betty Hoots bought the Frigid Queen ice cream store in Mattoon, Illinois.
01:02They quickly added burgers and fries to the menu and changed its name to Burger King.
01:06They even acquired a state trademark for the name in 1959.
01:09A few years later, the real Burger King rolled into town.
01:12It was a classic case of David vs. Goliath, and in this case, the little guy won.
01:16The larger Burger King chain was forbidden from opening a location anywhere inside a
01:2020-mile radius of the Hoots' Burger King.
01:22Although the company later offered the Hoots $10,000 to set up shop within the radius,
01:27their offer was firmly declined.
01:28The restaurant still exists to this day.
01:31The Google ad
01:32In 2017, Burger King introduced an ad campaign specifically designed to hijack the devices
01:37in viewers' homes.
01:38The commercial was basic enough.
01:40An actor facing the screen asks,
01:42"'Okay Google, what is the Whopper burger?'
01:46Any Google Home device that picked up the audio would then react by reading aloud the
01:49Wikipedia entry for the Whopper.
01:51Google didn't appreciate the gimmick.
01:53The ad was only effective for about three hours after it aired when the audio was added
01:57to a list of sounds that Google Home would refuse to respond to.
02:00Easy come, easy go.
02:02The BK sauna
02:04Burger King made headlines in 2016 when they opened their very own sauna.
02:08Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's located in Helsinki, the capital of a country populated by 5 million
02:13people and 2 million saunas.
02:15But only in this one can you relax, make your order, and chow down on a Whopper and some
02:18fries.
02:19It's not sweating like crazy, of course.
02:21There's enough room inside for around 15 people, making it perfect for private parties.
02:25And guests can even purchase robes embroidered with the BK logo.
02:28The Burger King sauna has been something of a surprise hit since it opened.
02:31And no wonder.
02:32Where else can you go to get literal meat sweats?
02:34How's the burger?
02:35It's really good.
02:36You're probably not supposed to do this, right?
02:37Let me see what happens.
02:38The net neutrality debate
02:47Net neutrality has been a landmark political issue for several years now.
02:50As the threat to net neutrality has increased, no small number of celebrities and companies
02:54have entered the fray to explain just how devastating it would be if internet providers
02:58were allowed to charge more for higher speeds and priority service.
03:01In 2018, Burger King broadcast a series of commercials in which customers were asked
03:05whether they wanted to pay more for their Whopper to get it faster.
03:08The customers paid different amounts based on each Whopper's making-burgers-per-second
03:11speed, whilst employees explained that, since the restaurant could make more selling chicken
03:15sandwiches, they had decided to restrict access speeds to the Whopper alone.
03:19You don't make the rules.
03:21You just enforce these ridiculous rules.
03:24Fortunately, we have to.
03:26Burger King then directed viewers to a petition aimed at preserving net neutrality.
03:30It was a brilliant way to make a realistic comparison between burgers and the potential
03:34pitfalls of an unbalanced internet.
03:35A Whopper actually told me about net neutrality.
03:38It's stupid, but true.
03:40Crown cards
03:41In 2008, actor and comedian Hugh Laurie sent shockwaves across the world by revealing to
03:46The Times that certain celebrities had been gifted their very own Lifetime Unlimited Burger
03:50King crown cards.
03:51He also named a number of well-known figures, including Jay Leno and George Lucas, as recipients
03:55of the card.
03:56Laurie didn't actually have his own card at the time, but was granted one soon after he
04:00made his comments to the press, making him the twelfth celebrity to receive an unlimited
04:04crown card.
04:05The Bling Burger
04:06In 2008, Burger King created what they simply called The Burger.
04:10Available in just one restaurant in West London, the burger was made with Wagyu beef, patinaigre
04:15ham, Cristal onion straws, white truffles, and Modena balsamic vinegar.
04:19Anyone wanting to sample this decadent beast would first have to fork over 95 euro, or
04:23around $125.
04:25It was all for a good cause, though.
04:27100 percent of the proceeds from sales of the burger were donated to the Help a London
04:31Child charity, an organization which lends a helping hand to children and young people
04:34suffering from homelessness, poverty, illness, and abuse.
04:38A secret meal
04:39Burger King's most famous secret menu item is the Quad Stacker.
04:43It consists of four patties, four slices of cheese, a layer of bacon, and special sauce.
04:47And if that doesn't exactly sound like the healthiest choice on the menu, that's because
04:51it's not.
04:52No official nutritional information exists for the Quad Stacker, but the Triple Stacker
04:56will set you back 640 calories, 42 grams of fat, and 940 milligrams of sodium.
05:01Throw in fries and a drink, and you've got yourself a disaster just waiting to happen.
05:05Maybe stick to the salad next time.
