00:00Hello and welcome. This is the show that finds you some of the best bargains around and also
00:09puts all sorts of products to the test. First, we have scoured, well actually they have scoured
00:20the shop so you don't have to. And here are some of the best deals that they have found
00:25First up, as many a parent will know, tomorrow is the 6th of March, World Book Day. And this
00:31isn't just a last minute scramble to make a book character costume for your kids to wear.
00:36Yeah, you should have done that by now. It's supposed to be about the wonders of reading.
00:41And happily, WH Smith have 20% off children's favourites right up until the end of the month.
00:46Next up is a great saving for anyone who's thinking of getting a laptop soon.
00:50AO are currently selling this 15.6 inch HP model for £229 down from £359 and you get a lot of
00:59battery life for your buck. 10 hours of it in fact. Wow, now here's one for the rugby fans.
01:05Round 4 of the Six Nations is coming up this weekend, the 8th and 9th of March. And the Six
01:10Nations official store is marking the occasion with a 20% discount on all their merch. You can
01:16get the official gear like this hoodie down from £60 to £48. Just enter the code SIXNATIONS20
01:24at the checkout and you'll come away with a win even if your team doesn't. Now whether you're
01:29watching the rugby this weekend with your mates or having a family movie night, Food Delivery app
01:35Just Eat has got your back. They don't just deliver fast food but stuff from your local shop too.
01:43And they're giving away 50% off snacks every Thursday to Sunday throughout March. For example
01:49they can deliver sour cream and onion pringles from our local One Stop for £1.50 instead of £3.
01:55And finally this week is the last week to get your hands on some cut price homeware at
02:01Asda's George home brand event. Now they've got loads of savings on home essentials like this pair
02:08of silent night pillows down from £14 to £8.94. Or this Russell Hobbs microwave down from £69
02:16to £49.08. This sale ends on Monday the 10th of March so if you need to replace those flat
02:22worn out pillows you better get out of bed right now and do it. Don't forget to check
02:27the retailer's websites for the terms and conditions and happy deal hunting. Still to come
02:33Georgie shows us how to save money with price tracking sites. The real superpower of these
02:39sites is to help you shop smarter to see how prices have changed. And John Bentley is making
02:46a mess so he can find the best value spot cleaner. This is actually really really good.
02:54Now it's time for the blind test where a panel of guests test a product at three different prices
03:01and decide which is best. But we keep the brand and the price a secret so it's purely on
03:07performance alone. This week we're putting home coffee machines to the test. These machines use
03:13single serving coffee pods which are readily available in a range of strengths and flavours.
03:19To find the best by coffee machine we've called on the help of coffee loving teachers Pete and James
03:25and student mentor Hassan. Pete, James, Hassan, welcome. Thank you for having us. Do you have a
03:32coffee machine at school? We do not. It would be very useful if we had one in the staff room because
03:36they're quite quick. Yeah. Put another one of those pods in, have a nice cup of coffee, have a drink
03:40and then back to lessons. It does need to be quick. It needs to be really quick. Time is precious for
03:46our testers so we're comparing how long the machines take to make a coffee as well as how it
03:51tastes. First impressions please. What do you think of coffee machine number one? Our coffee buffs
03:58don't know it yet but the first pod machine is our mid-range option, the Tassimo MyWay 2 at £69.99
04:05which has an integrated Brita water filter to help prevent limescale. I think it looks nice.
04:12There's quite a few buttons on there. I'm a bit of a technophobe. We'll help you through.
04:16Next, the Genio S takes Dolce Gusto pods and is the cheapest of our three machines
04:24at £45. It can make cold brew coffee as well as hot. It looks low budget and hopefully easier to use.
04:36Finally, what will the friends think of the expensive Lore Barista? At £118.99 this can
04:42make either a single serve coffee or two small cups at once. The controls being at the back there
04:50seem a bit weird. I don't agree with James. I had it in my kitchen and it was like tucked in. I'd have
04:54to push out all the time. Oh good point. We'll be making lattes and while machines one and two
05:02use pre-sweetened milk in pods, the Lore Barista needs fresh milk adding. I think I would prefer
05:09fresh milk here rather than anything coming in pods. Okay, so we're starting unsurprisingly with
05:15machine number one and we're going for timing. Three, two, one, press the button. Go! The MyWay 2 has a
05:24range of 65 drinks available. It looks very nice. It's frothing up. With a single serving of latte
05:32currently costing 75 pence. Nice sound that isn't it? That'd be nice in the morning, nice and relaxing.
05:41We have a solid orange light so we can now go in and change the pod. Oh look at that mix. That looks
05:47very satisfying. Stop the clock Gabby. Okay. Machine one took two minutes and 36 seconds to brew.
05:58I'm quite happy with that. It's quicker than a kettle. Okay. What about the taste
06:03from our mid-range machine? Oh wow that looks very nice. Oh we've got a wow.
06:10I'm in love. Oh wow. Wow this is very nice. We're gonna tip a tiny bit so you can both taste it.
06:18There's one teaspoon of sugar included in this latte. It's quite sweet. Sweet enough? Yeah I
06:24think it is yeah. It's really really nice smooth. So we got a love, we got a really really nice.
06:30Great, sweet enough. I wouldn't need any more sugar added to that. Yeah it's not too strong.
06:34Okay are you ready to go with machine number two? Three, two, one, let's go.
06:42The budget Dolce Gusto Genio S has over 50 drinks to choose from.
06:47With the price of a latte currently starting at 50 pence. Oh it's noisier.
06:53Noisier. I think it's too loud. Okay now you're putting the coffee pod in. I am. It's a little
06:58bit more fiddly. Yeah it is. Just a bit. And a bit of spillage as well. Yeah. Okay wow it is quicker.
07:06Yeah. It's in fact two minutes. It's over half a minute quicker but what's the coffee like?
07:13That wouldn't look at a place in an expensive coffee shop. It's a nice cup of coffee. Better
07:17than machine number one. It looks like the Sahara Desert. This has got six grams of sugar per
07:23serving. Okay let's try it then. Doesn't taste anywhere near as sweet to me. Okay. Always smooth
07:31it's just it tastes more watery. Almost like an instant mix of coffee yeah. It's got better
07:37temperature. It's a lot hotter than the first one. Yes. It's very weak even for me. Definitely hotter
07:42than number one but I don't like the taste of it. It might be hotter and faster but the team just
07:48don't like the taste and so we're on to the last and most expensive machine. On your marks get set go.
07:58The noise is a lot quieter. A lot quieter yeah. The Lorbarista's latte
08:04cost 25 pence excluding the milk which froths in a separate pot while you brew.
08:11Oh that's frothy. Looks like a pint of guineas. That was two minutes and two seconds.
08:21Not a bad time. The milk's in and we have our latte. Do you want to give it a stir up?
08:27Let's have a look. Yeah that looks quite nice to be fair. Ah but how does it taste?
08:33Oh okay. I think I'm gonna be awake for a week. That's the kind of coffee you need
08:40in the morning because it'll keep you going to the evening. One for you. One for you. Give that a try.
08:48I can see what he means by the strength of the real strong coffee taste.
08:52It's very strong. Sugar is definitely needed for this one. Okay. I'm gonna add a tiny bit of sugar
08:57to each of yours just to sweeten it up. Still harsh. Still harsh. Yeah. Yeah still quite harsh.
09:04Very bad. So number three wasn't their cup of coffee despite adding sugar. The friends still
09:13don't know the price or brand so which one will be out on top for our coffee loving crew? I know
09:19machine one takes longer but I'd rather wait 37 seconds extra. And every aspect is better.
09:26I think it's pretty unanimous isn't it? Okay we've got to ask you though
09:29which machine is the overall winner? Number one hands down. Yeah number one one million percent.
09:35Yeah definitely number one. Machine number one was the mid-range from Tassimo and it was £69.99.
09:44Oh that's good. I was expecting a coffee machine to be loads more expensive. I'm going to actually
09:49buy my wife one now. And use it more for yourself. Coffee machine number two is our budget option
09:57£45. Coffee machine number three is our premium option £118.99. Teamwork. Yeah my wife's not
10:06going to be getting one of them. The Tassimo My Way 2 costs £69.99 and with the latte pod starting
10:17at 75p this could be a huge saving compared with fancy coffee shop prices. Please go nowhere because
10:24after the break we've got some of the best supermarket deals for you.
10:37Welcome back to shop smart save money and you're right on time for the big shop. Yes our wonderful
10:42team here have been checking out the supermarkets to find some of the week's best bargains to stick
10:48in your trolley. Before the break our guests chose their favorite pod coffee machine but if you don't
10:53have one in your kitchen or you're more of an instant kind of person you'll love this deal from
10:58Tesco. This Kenco instant americano is down from £6.60 to just £3.95 with a club card and it makes
11:0655 cups of coffee that's just 7p per cup. Next we're off to Lidl where this week there's 15%
11:12off ready to cook chicken. This Chinese style chicken stir fry is down from £3.99 to £3.39
11:19and the sweet chilli chicken breasts are down from £2.75 to just £2.33. Saving money as well as time
11:25winner. Sainsbury's this week have a great saving on tubs of Philadelphia they're down from £2.25
11:32to £1.25 with a nectar card. Next it's over to Asda. These Shazam's meat or veggie samosas are
11:38down from £4.50 to £3.48 and finally there's a third of these I love them. Mockingbird raw
11:46smoothies at Waitrose. You can get them in several flavors and they were £4.75 for a big bottle like
11:52these now they're down to £3.16. Fancier, no she's already, yeah I'm on it. Go on then here we go
11:58that's for you have that all right. Now Georgie Barrett's got some tips on how to save money by
12:04using price tracker sites. Cheers Georgie you have that I'll just have these two. Oh great.
12:10When we're shopping online none of us want to pay more than we need to but with thousands of
12:16online retailers and prices often going up and down it's tough to know whether we're getting
12:20a good deal. This is where online price tracking websites come in.
12:28Price tracking websites work by scanning products from multiple online stores then
12:33displaying the best price right now and how that price has changed over time.
12:40This not only helps you pay less but it also helps you decide whether now is the right time to buy
12:45because if you see that the price has slowly been increasing it's probably worth waiting a
12:50few weeks to see if it comes back down. Some popular tracker sites include Ideelo, PriceRunner
12:58and Telco and between them they cast a pretty wide net. PriceRunner for example claims that
13:04you can compare the prices of over 7.2 million products from over 6,800 online retailers.
13:12So let's say you want to buy one of these right now a Tfile 9-in-1 air fryer. Well if you look
13:18on the Tfile website they're currently retailing at £219.99. However head to PriceRunner and
13:26you'll find that AO.com are selling it for just £89. The real superpower of these sites is to
13:34help you shop smarter to see how prices have changed. So looking at our air fryer the cheapest
13:42that it's ever been over the last three months is £84.55 which means our current deal is pretty good.
13:50Now is a good time to buy.
13:55Sometimes though price trackers can help you shop smart by holding off on a purchase. So I have my
14:02eyes on these. These are the Airpods Pro 2. They're actually my husband's but I really want
14:07a pair for myself. So I've had a little look on the price tracker website and I can see that I
14:12currently can get them for £175.79 but I've also seen that over the past three months they have gone
14:21as low as £120. So it could very well drop down to that price again as it's not a purchase I need
14:28immediately and I think it's worth holding off. I'm using Ideelo this time which collects data
14:33from over 50,000 retailers and if I sign in then I can actually set up a price alert. So let me do
14:39that for £120. Now when any of those retailers start selling the Airpods at that price I get a
14:46very handy email. And many of the sites have apps like this one so it's really easy to set up alerts
14:54and notifications so that you never miss a deal.
15:03If you do a lot of your shopping on Amazon then there is a price tracker just for you my friend.
15:08It's called Camel Camel Camel. So if you're after something like this, this lovely De'Longhi kettle,
15:14you'll see that on Amazon it's currently retailing at £44.99. Now if we head on to Camel Camel Camel
15:22you can see the price of it over the past year. You can also set up price notifications.
15:32Setting a too low price threshold may mean you never get that all-important notification.
15:37So be realistic with how low you want the price to go. Also each tracking site will cover different
15:43online stores so my ultimate shop smart saving tip is to make sure you set up notifications on
15:49more than one so you maximize your chance of savings. Remember the information on these
15:55tracking websites should be seen as just a starting point. Make sure you're buying from
16:00a reputable retailer and be ready to act fast. Price drops are only brief so when you get that
16:07alert if the price is right for you make sure you buy. Thank you Georgie. Now you know those things
16:14online that create a buzz. Everybody's talking about them. They're thinking oh I really want to
16:19get it. Everyone says it's really really good. Well we are going to put them to the test and
16:23find out if they really are really really good. And this week our eye was caught by this. It's a
16:29weighted hula hoop. The sport now smart weighted hula hoop is a big hit online. It's a new affordable
16:37fitness device where a hoop and rotating weight claim to help you burn calories and tone your
16:43tummy. If you're not out of breath after 10 minutes you're not doing it hard and fast. Okay but what are
16:50they like in real life? It comes in sections so there are 16 pieces and you have to fit it snugly
16:57around your middle. Now I'm just going to take a piece out. I have to say it is a little bit fiddly.
17:03Yeah. Put it around yourself. Yep. And then you clip it in. Just hold me awake. Thank you. So
17:10the little dial on here tells you the time. Yep. The rotation. How many times you've done it and
17:14the calories that you're burning. I'm going to step back before you swing that. The 400 gram gravity
17:21ball should help burn calories and turn fat into muscle. So are you feeling it work your abs at all?
17:28Your core? No I'm feeling it on my quads. Yep. And lots of people are keeping video diaries so they're
17:34doing this every day so it's a really good way to get people maybe moving a bit more if they're not.
17:39But I'm just thinking oh this is a bit of fun. Okay. Okay but I'd love a second opinion Alex.
17:48Cameraman Alex. The adjustable belt fits waists from 29 to 44 inches.
17:55Right let me add this section. There we go Alex. We're going to fling it around
18:01and then we'll all move out the way. Are you ready Alex? Ready. Go Alex.
18:05Can you feel yourself doing work Gary? I mean after a while probably yeah. Yeah I've been doing
18:14it for quite a while. Would you, all right Alex, would you go for one of those? No personally no.
18:20So our already trimmed cameraman isn't a fan but it could be fun for those of us who are less toned.
18:26Let's talk money. How much do you think that costs? I'd say £30. Okay. Tread on the other camera.
18:34I'm going to go for £25. You're going £25. One of you was spot on. Oh wow. It's £24.99.
18:43There we go. Well done you. Would you like it? One more time. Here we go. Now we won't see
18:48instant results today but if you're looking for a fun way to get moving this could be worth a spin.
18:55Stick around because coming up John Bentley will be seeing which spot cleaner scrubs up the best.
19:01We're really gonna have to keep going at it. This is agitation. Very much so John. And we've
19:07got some ways to shop smart and save some dough when baking. A household could save up to £80.
19:23Welcome back to Shop Smart Save Money. Where have you been? You've already missed some of the best
19:29deals around that we shared with you and the best coffee pod machine. So we set a reminder at seven
19:36o'clock Wednesday nights Channel 5. Done. Good idea that. Yep and we've got more great ideas coming
19:41your way but first we want to share with you our ravenous roving reporter and bargain hunter
19:47extraordinaire Mr Jordan Cox. It's Crafts Week this week and although your dog might not be
19:53bringing home best in show, might not be bringing you home a trophy, you could actually earn some
19:57money from your dog through doing something quite ordinary. It's through an app called Biscuit which
20:03is free to download for iOS and Android. Once downloaded you can give it some information about
20:07your dog including its breed then you can earn money every time you take it for a walk. Each
20:13walk you take up to an hour long earns you points called biscuits. These biscuits can be transferred
20:18in to vouchers after you've collected enough and this can be for Costa, for M&S, even supermarkets
20:25like Tesco and Asda and of course if you take a supermarket voucher your dogs could actually pay
20:31for their own food. Why don't you two earn me money?
20:38Thank you Jordan. Now with the cost of living still on the rise we're all looking for ways to
20:42save a bob or two by doing things for ourselves and that includes baking as homemade cakes and
20:49bread are often cheaper than shop-bought. Home baking isn't just a flash in the pan. Over 60%
20:56of us are getting our bake on every month. I'm gluten-free. When I go to the gluten-free section
21:02not only does it all taste of sand but it's really expensive. Let's try to help you. Here
21:07is where baking at home you know it really comes into its own doesn't it? Absolutely.
21:12A budget bread maker like this Russell Hobbs Classics at £69.90 can help you make tasty bread at home
21:22and the ingredients can work out cheaper than buying a ready-made loaf. It's actually got
21:27a gluten-free setting and that is the recipe we are following right now. Baking your own
21:34instead of buying bread could save a household £80 a year. This gluten-free loaf will cost us
21:41a couple of quid compared to around £3 for a similar supermarket loaf. So this takes you
21:48through all the settings as you see they go from 1 to 12 and gluten-free is setting number 9.
21:54Two hours and 55 minutes. No way. I can't wait two hours and 55 minutes. But by the magic of TV
22:02I don't have to. Here's one I made earlier. Right. I'm gonna say I baked I didn't. Steve who works on
22:09the show baked earlier. Well done Steve. Thank you very much Steve. To save Steve's or indeed your
22:15tasty loaf from going stale a bread bin like this one from Kitchen Craft will come in handy.
22:21It's expandable. This transparent bread bin also comes with an ingenious slicing guide.
22:29Oh you can. Yes. Slice it. Yes. You want a thick slice. That's really thick. I always love a doorstop.
22:36Oh look at that. Look at the inside. Look at that. The air bubbles. Oh that's really good. As a long-time
22:43victim of bland and dry gluten-free bread from the supermarket for me this is a revelation
22:50and cheaper. For a more exciting treat without having to splash out check out Big Oven.
22:57Big Oven is a free to use website with recipes meal plans and cooking tutorials
23:02and it has a few money-saving tricks in its pantry. Like the leftover section. Very very
23:08cool. Let me share with you. Tell Big Oven what three ingredients you have to hand and it will
23:14tell you what you can make with them. Oh so loads of things. Cookies cookies cookies. Oh that's a
23:20good show. It gives you the recipe and ingredients list. Oh but look we've got measurements in cups.
23:26Don't despair. Cupify is a free app that converts American measurements into European
23:32and vice versa. The interface on this is really satisfying. Dead simple and very satisfying.
23:40And once you've got your quantities the ingenious spoon is all your measuring spoons and a spatula
23:46in one. I don't have to keep swapping out different sized spoons. Great. I can do teaspoon. I can do
23:53tablespoon. But also you can do scrapey scrapey. That's a good bit of kit. So you've got the
23:58scrapey scrapey. Yeah. You've got the measurement and oh it's its own spoon stand. Recipes often
24:08need you to roll a certain thickness. This rolling pin has adjustable rings which keep it at a set
24:14height for smooth pastry at the right thickness every time. See the discs? Yeah. On there we're
24:22going three millimeters. Look at this. They're going to be nice and thin ready for the oven.
24:30Look how uniform. Would you like to be a gingerbread man or would you like to be a star?
24:35Gingerbread man. It's the simple things. Now when you are baking you can end up owning quite a bit
24:43of kit and that takes up a lot of room. Not if you've got one of these. This master class
24:50seven piece bakeware bundle has all your baking and roasting essentials in one stacking set.
24:56So you've got your cooling rack. You've got your baking tray there and then in here look
25:02you've got your cupcake tray and then you've got various sizes of tin which would normally
25:09take up loads of space look. And it's dishwasher safe as well. With our cookies done in record tv
25:17magic time. Here we are look at that. Oh let's grab that cupcake tray because we are on to the
25:23showstopper. Now I have tried to ice many a cupcake in my time. When you use the bag. The bag and you
25:29cut it and you and that just goes splurge. The Tala icing syringe set aims to let you ice your
25:35buns cakes and muffins with surgical precision for less than five quid. Delicious buttercream
25:42is made with butter and icing sugar. Oh yes this is going to be insta-worthy. Do you want to try?
25:50Oh look you've done this before. I haven't but I'm flipping good at it.
25:59And for a personal touch you can print cupcake toppers with your own designs or photographs.
26:06We got ours from eat your photo. So very simple all you have to do is go onto their website
26:12upload the image you want they'll send it in the post. Who would like to eat Otis's face? Don't
26:20all rush at once. So I'm going to go and give these all to the crew. Are you a cute one? Yeah. Okay
26:24who else wants one? Here we are. Now the cleanup is the bit we all dread. But if you do happen to
26:30drop a cupcake or make a little bit of a mess fear not John Bentley is at hand for help.
26:36Most of us have done it. Knocked over a wine glass. Made muddy footprints. Dropped makeup.
26:42Leaving stains that standard cleaning products can find tough. Having an affordable spot cleaner
26:48in your cupboard could help you avoid a costly professional bill when accidents happen. But are
26:55they worth buying? And should you spend big or will a cheap model be fine? I'm testing a premium
27:00spot cleaner against a budget version to find out. My premium cleaner is the Vaxx Spot Wash Max Duo
27:08at £219.99. For the premium price you get what Vaxx say is their most powerful spot washer.
27:16Its budget rival is the Tower Aquajet Plus at £74.99. It's around a third of the price. By
27:24comparison this is 400 watts rather than 500 but this test is all about value for money so it can
27:30still take victory. Summer Gorman the head honcho of cleaning company Made & More is my expert helper
27:39for the day. Her experience cleaning professionally will help me test the machines thoroughly.
27:45Summer great to see you. How do you normally deal with tricky stains? We pre-spray with a
27:51professional product then we agitate that stain and then we extract it with the professional
27:56machine. Right well these machines are going to try and emulate all of those processes. I can't
28:01wait to get testing. I've never used one of these before at all. Oh no me neither. Oh wow. It's going to be so exciting. Yes.
28:07Will the machines impress in the first of three tests? A muddy footprint. First the premium Vaxx.
28:15We're using the antibacterial cleaning solution included in the box and it has a choice of
28:20attachments. What should we start with do you think? I think this one today John. Just because it's a
28:26large area and that one's not going to cover it. Yeah so let's try this one first. I'm going to
28:33switch on now. Brilliant thank you. Summer is spraying cleaner agitating with a brush and extracting
28:41with suction all with one attachment. The same processes as a professional machine. What's your
28:47first impression? Suction's really really strong however we're really going to have to like keep
28:54going at it. Is it agitation? Very much so John. The proof is housed in there. After a couple of minutes
29:03and a swap to the smaller brush the stain's gone leaving just a damp mark that should dry off.
29:10What's your overall impressions of the Vaxx on this test? Very easy to use, great suction,
29:17the bristle is definitely getting into them fibres. As a carpet cleaning novice it seems
29:21you've done a good job. Yeah. Yes. How will the budget tower compare? We've had to buy our own
29:28cleaning solution for a few quid and it has just one brush attachment. Any differences obviously?
29:34Yes there is a lot of difference. Suction isn't that good. There's more water. Yes. Less extraction.
29:44The less powerful tower is struggling at first but its suction improves with the brush removed.
29:50This one has got more extraction than this tool for some reason. It's taken longer but the end
29:59result is very similar. Do you think you've done the best job that these machines can actually do?
30:03Yeah definitely John. So the Vaxx has made a quicker more convenient job of getting rid of the
30:09stain. Absolutely. The more powerful premium Vaxx is faster but ultimately both removed our mud.
30:18Next I'm upping the ante with oily and powdery makeup on the furniture.
30:23How would you normally tackle a makeup disaster like this? I'd vacuum this area off first
30:29and then only treat this area. First the premium Vaxx with some careful suction.
30:37See that? Yeah. Before spraying with detergent and agitating with its smallest brush.
30:46I feel something happening. Oh yeah you're getting some more liquid. But it's tricky to control the
30:53amount of detergent being sprayed. It's very watery. Yeah. I think that's the best you're gonna get.
31:04Even the bigger brush can't banish the stain. I think it needs a new chair. I'd buy a new one
31:11or get it recovered. Yes. Well let's see if the tower handles the makeup test. Yes. Have you got
31:16the right attachment to start with? Yes I have.
31:24Ah. Well that's actually slightly more contained isn't it?
31:33We've got the surface muck off. So I'm going to change this nozzle now John.
31:38And we're going to go for the brush.
31:40So there's definitely more control with this one John. But the suction isn't there. It's not coming out.
31:55This one has more control but the stain is obviously still very visible. Whereas the Vaxx
32:03has actually got the stain out. To a degree. To a degree. The Vaxx has given better results
32:10but both stains would need professional help. Finally. Oh no not again. Red wine all over the rug
32:18which has been drying for 15 minutes. A tough test. What's the best way of dealing with red
32:25wine stains? Is it as they would you to say stick white wine on it? I would suggest baking soda and
32:31white vinegar. Leave for 30 minutes and then damp off with a wet cloth. Oh right. And it should come
32:37straight out. Well I wonder how these are going to perform. Let's start with the Vaxx. Okay.
32:46The 225 pound Vaxx starts off well. I can really smell that wine. This is a rather nice combination I think
32:53that's leeching the wine together. But after more suction my spill is still visible. I've had a few
33:00wine accidents at home over the years and I think I've got the stains out better than this. Yes.
33:04Will the 75 pound tower do better?
33:12Oh John you're on to a winner there. Really? Oh wow. This is actually really really good.
33:20Red wine appears to be the tower's specialist subject. Though it's 1.2 litre water tanks,
33:26one for clean and one for dirty, are only around half the size of the Vaxx's and fill up quickly
33:32before appearing to overflow with foam. Well that's interesting. So it's the same amount of
33:40wine spilled on the same carpet, two different cleaners and one could say actually that the
33:45tower seems to be slightly better in this test. Definitely yeah. Both stains are still damp from
33:51detergent but the Vaxx has left more red wine than the tower. So it's a win for the 75 pound budget
33:57cleaner. Based on today's results these machines may not remove all tricky stains but they could
34:05prove a useful weapon against real life mess. So now it comes to answering the very important
34:10question which of these two offers best value for money? So the Vaxx doesn't really offer great
34:16value for money because it is so expensive and it didn't get the stains out. However the tower
34:21at 75 pounds it shocked us at the end when it did do a better job than the Vaxx. I'd go with
34:28the tower job. Still to come we're helping some smooth operators find the best steam generating
34:36iron. It's really impressive especially because the head's so small. And cheap wellies that
34:42look expensive. There isn't that much difference between them.
34:54Welcome back to Shop Smart Save Money. Now it's the part of the show where we look at products
34:59from big brands and their cheeky cheaper doppelgangers to see if we can make savings by
35:05swapping to something very similar. Yeah this week it's wellies and there's one big aspirational name
35:11when it comes to wellington boots. Hunter. As worn by supermodels at festivals and royals no less.
35:19Hunter's originals cost 89 pounds but oh look these are very similar. Town and country wellies
35:26with the badge on the front and buckle on the side are 70 pounds cheaper. How different are they?
35:33I've got a little test for you. Okay so you've got you've got boots on. Yeah. They are oh wait
35:39they're different. No muddy puddles today. It's all on looks and comfort. Hunter is natural rubber
35:46town and country is pvc. Okay. They both have padding under the feet. One is slightly looser
35:53and one is slightly tighter. I'm looking at two boots which look very similar. Slightly
35:59different design on the toe. But I don't know which one of those. Does one of these really
36:06look like it costs 70 pounds more than the other? Okay I'm gonna let you know. Drum roll.
36:15Both feel pretty much similar but you are saving almost 70 pounds. Despite the slight
36:22difference in quality town and country certainly look like a cheaper alternative worth considering.
36:29Now it's the part of the show where you get in touch with us to see if we can help you choose
36:34the right product for you. Now this time Sinead and Adrian from Manchester have been in touch. So
36:39let's see what we can do. I'm Adrian. I'm Sinead. And who's this?
36:48Irama. And this is Krakati. And this is Krakati. Good girl. As a busy family I spend at least four
36:56to five hours a week ironing. We have a steam generating iron that we got about five to six
37:03years ago. Bought with a bigger house and a bigger family. Recently it started to give up.
37:08Sometimes 10-15 minutes to get it the steam working is a bit frustrating. Not only that I
37:15think that whilst you're using it sometimes you just stop cleaning. We've definitely got our
37:19money's worth out of it. It's gone through a lot of clothes now and it's on its last legs.
37:22So we're looking for a steam generating iron that stays on and can last at least an hour or two when
37:28you're doing a big load. Also something that you could use vertically when you need to do a quick
37:33refresh of something that's been ironed. So our budget as a family is three to four hundred pounds
37:39for our new iron. This family get through a lot of ironing and their current piece of kit is a
37:45steam generator iron that's an iron with a separate water tank. So they need a piece of kit that can
37:51pack a punch. This Tefal Ixio Power combines the power of a steam generator with the convenience
37:58of a handheld clothes steamer. So this couple can even wander around their home
38:03zapping wrinkles out of curtains and freshening up their sofa. So let's see how they got on.
38:09It's a Tefal Ixio Power all-in-one. I thought it was massive. So how can iron be that big?
38:16Look you're going to be able to iron and steam things in different positions.
38:22Looks like there's a standing up feature as well. Mum was very excited. When we opened the main box
38:27everything was numbered so we opened it in that sequence. And this is the base. It came across as
38:33very sturdy. It was nice and heavy and durable. The Ixio is made up of an adjustable board that
38:39can stand vertically, steam iron unit with removable brush and base containing a 1.1 litre
38:45water tank. So I think with the kids they shouldn't be able to push it over too easily and
38:51I'd hope that you wouldn't have to dismantle it once you've got it up. You could just wheel it
38:55away and put it away quite easily. The second box contained the ironing board. Wow. It was easily
39:04clicking together. It was nicely meshy so it allows the steam to kind of like travel through.
39:09When you use a steam generating iron it generates a lot of moisture so if you don't have this
39:14function the clothes can end up getting wet again. And this I guess is the cuddle.
39:20A little one. It's a little one here but it's still going to be very hot okay
39:25when it's turned on okay. But I think mama's in love. Should we give this a go? Yes. Nice.
39:35I think it was quite intuitive the way it's been designed. The instructions were very clear.
39:41Yeah I think it was easy to set it up and I think the more you use it the easier it will be.
39:50New board assembled Sinead and Adrian just needed to fill the tank with water before testing it.
39:57It was easy to start. It came on straight away and it was ready for the steam to come out within 45
40:03seconds. Oh wow that was a bit more fast isn't it? The Ixio promises to produce up to 200 grams
40:11of steam per minute. That's around four times as much as a standard T-fal iron. It also claims to
40:18kill 99.9% of viruses, bacteria and germs. The overall process of doing my blazer was very quick
40:26and efficient. It kills bacteria okay. It probably saves money on dry cleaning.
40:31I ironed our bed sheets which are really important to me to be ironed but probably the most painful
40:36ones to iron because they're really big. The board can be set to horizontal for items like sheets
40:41and adjusted to different heights and as the iron itself doesn't contain a water tank it's lighter
40:47and easier to maneuver than the normal iron during longer sessions. Sinead appreciated how quickly it
40:54removed creases despite being small. It was really good. I really like that we could put the ironing
41:01board up to the highest setting because the sheets are really long so it's not trailing on the floor
41:06and I feel like I'm a bit more a master of my own domain with the size of the ironing board and the
41:11size of the iron. I really felt it penetrated well through the material of the bed sheets.
41:17It's maintained the heat, the speed of the steam, the consistency of the steam. It's really impressive
41:24especially because the head's so small. I don't think I've ever had this sheet look so ironed.
41:32With Sinead impressed by the T-fal's performance on sheets and clothes when ironing on its board
41:38she wanted to test its portability. The germ busting abilities of steam could give Sinead
41:43and Adrian peace of mind between washes. We used it on the bed sheet that was actually on the bed it
41:49had the quilt in in terms of refreshing it which was really impressive. If you're in a push you
41:54could actually just put the sheets on the bed and give them a quick revive especially when you pull
41:58them out of the cupboard you can give it a quick revive and then we also used it on the curtains as
42:06well. We used the breast feature. Sometimes washing curtains can be a bit cumbersome but this, the
42:14fact that it kills 99% of bacteria, revitalises it, it'll probably you know cut out one of those
42:22washes to the curtains that you'd normally do. The only thing that we'd probably change about this is
42:28that we'd like this to be a little bit longer so you can get a little bit higher on the curtain
42:32functions but other than that I think it's been really easy to use and it's not that heavy to hold
42:37the base unit and do it either is it. I thought it was really easy to use. I like that it's quite
42:46compact as well the fact that you can store it in the vertical position. For somebody that irons
42:52every day I think the agility of being able to get through all the ironing quite quickly is
42:58a really positive benefit. I didn't like it, I loved it. I think the price of £299.99 is
43:07really impressive because I think we paid that for our old iron about five, six years ago and
43:14considering where the technology's come along and the fact that you get a board with it as well
43:18I'd definitely buy it. Yes we would definitely.
43:23Great. Yes. They loved it, they thought that it performed really well, was very very versatile
43:29and they would definitely buy it. Small yet powerful. I'm so pleased that they liked it.
