00:00Three cattle farmers were acquitted and discharged of drug distribution and possession charges
00:07by a High Court in Johor Bahru. High Court Judge Datuk Abubakar Kattar acquitted and
00:13discharged S. Purusothaman, 42, K. Puvaneswaran, 58, and R. Viknesh, 39, after the prosecution
00:22failed to prove a prima facie case against them. The three friends were initially charged
00:27with distributing 6.2 kilograms of methamphetamine at a cattle farm in Kampung Pengkalan Batu,
00:33Mersing, at 4.10 p.m. on August 28, 2019, and possessing 58.68 liters of liquid containing
00:43methamphetamine at the same location and time. When delivering his verdict, Abubakar stated
00:51that the discovery of the drugs on the premises was insufficient to establish that Purusothaman
00:57had control or possession of them. Purusothaman's lawyer, G. Subramaniam Nair, said that seven
01:03witnesses had been called since the hearing began in 2023. They were charged under section
01:0939B subsection 1A of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries a mandatory death sentence or
01:15life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane if found guilty. They were also
01:20charged with drug possession under section 12 subsection 2 of the same law, which carries
01:26a fine of up to 100,000 ringgit, a maximum of five years in prison or both upon conviction.
