The sky appears blue due to a phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering. Sunlight, which is composed of all colors of the rainbow, enters the Earth's atmosphere. When it encounters tiny particles like nitrogen and oxygen molecules, the shorter wavelengths of light, like blue and violet, are scattered more than the longer wavelengths, like red and orange.

This scattered blue light reaches our eyes from all directions, making the sky appear blue.
