Cyclone Alfred has slowed and it's now not expected to hit the coast until later tomorrow, instead of overnight tonight.

That gives the 4.5 million people in south eastern Queensland and northern New South Wales in the cyclone's path more time to prepare.

But this "slowing" has also raised fears it could intensify before making landfall, making it even more destructive. Laura Tupou has more. | Subscribe: https://bit.ly/2JPg8oB

00:00Laura is here now with an update on tropical cyclone Alfred which is
00:03inching closer to Australia. Yes the cyclone has slowed and it's now not
00:08expected to hit the coast until later tomorrow instead of overnight tonight.
00:12That gives the 4.5 million people in these areas in southern eastern
00:17Queensland and northern New South Wales who are in the cyclone's path more time
00:21to prepare. But this slowing has also raised fears it could intensify before
00:26making landfall making it even more destructive. It may still be more than
00:3224 hours until it reaches land here on the Gold Coast it's already making
00:37itself known. It's been more than 50 years since a cyclone hit this area
00:43which means most are learning for the first time what to do, some the hard way.
00:49It's also unusual to get a cyclone this far south and that's why there are so
00:52many people in harm's way in this huge population centre. It's tracking to hit
00:56between the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast. The areas in Red, Brisbane, Morton
01:01Bay and Logan are all under an emergency alert. Further south in New South Wales
01:06people who live in the areas marked with orange triangles have been told to
01:10prepare to evacuate. The places in yellow must monitor the conditions.
01:15Tropical cyclone Alfred certainly does not recognise any borders and nor should
01:21the government's response. Along with officials locals continue to prepare
01:26their homes and businesses while the weather on shore sends mixed messages.
01:30The conditions have as we speak just worsened you can see that rain behind us.
01:34We are just north of where you are down on the Gold Coast and things here are
01:38very quiet and very calm indeed. Nevertheless the advice is clear, prepare
01:44for the worst. There's about four and a half million Australians potentially in
01:48harm's way that's about 1.8 million homes and we're expecting billions and
01:53billions of dollars worth of damage. Until then surfs up with waves reaching
01:57eight metres this morning but also reaching buildings. If you're planning on
02:02going to the Burley Pub this weekend I don't think there'll be one. Forecasts
02:06showing tropical cyclone Alfred will hit sometime tomorrow after lunch local time.
02:10The delay isn't because its path has changed but because it's moving at a
02:15slower speed. A risk is of course that in slowing up that it increases in its
02:21intensity. With storm surges, destructive winds and flooding
02:26predicted right into the weekend.
