00:00Not only is opposition leader Peter Dutton hoping to become the next Prime Minister at the federal election,
00:05to do so he's going to have to win his ninth consecutive term as the federal member for Dixon.
00:11Dixon, located just north of Brisbane, is where Peter Dutton has held his seat for 24 years.
00:17It's also where I grew up.
00:19So I went back recently and spoke to some voters in the area to find out how they're feeling ahead of the election,
00:24but also to find out whether the coalition's war on public service waste has reached Queensland voters.
00:31Those who are happy for a chat were pretty glowing of the opposition leader.
00:34They said they loved his community values and that he had a really straight-talking attitude.
00:39Here's what one resident had to say.
00:41He is great for the electorate.
00:45People love him.
00:47He is decisive.
00:52He knows how to call a spade a spade.
00:56He can talk. He can talk the talk and he can walk the walk, which is what is needed in Canberra at the moment.
01:03The coalition's messaging around public service job cuts has certainly reached Queensland voters.
01:08Some were a little bit wary of the idea, given Queensland has been through some pretty big statewide public service cuts in the past.
01:15However, others were pretty supportive of the idea.
01:18I think the public service is too big.
01:21I mean, he doesn't have to get a knife out and cut everybody's job, which he won't.
01:25Even if he cuts them, I don't think it's going to make much of an impact.
01:31Other people I spoke to were pretty happy with how Labor has been performing over the last few years.
01:36They mentioned things like cheaper energy bills and higher wages for early childhood educators.
01:41And despite all the praise for Peter Dutton, there were very few people who knew much about what policies the opposition leader was bringing to the federal election.
01:50But as it turns out, for some people, detail in the policy isn't all they think about when they head to the polling booth.
01:56I don't agree with a lot of Peter's policies.
02:00But then again, you know, hey, let's give it a go. You never know.
