00:00♪
00:05Let's take a look at the shining story of a person with a disability
00:08who did something that others see as his weakness.
00:12Let's watch this.
00:14♪
00:16When it comes to dreams, they say, never say die.
00:20And this is also what 31-year-old Princess Diane Mendoza said,
00:25that her disability was not a barrier to the pandemic
00:28to achieve her dream of becoming a successful teacher.
00:32At a young age of just two years,
00:34it became difficult for them to accept her condition,
00:38especially since her father works abroad.
00:41But despite the trials,
00:44their family did not give up
00:46and they learned to use sign language to communicate.
00:51Diane completed her course of Applying Deaf Studies
00:53as a major in Business Entrepreneurship
00:55at the College of St. Benildong in 2015.
00:58After her true calling was revealed,
01:01she enrolled at the De La Salle University, Manila
01:03for the Teacher Certificate Program.
01:06Despite her determination,
01:08she struggled several times to get a licensure exam for teachers again.
01:12But it was not a barrier for her not to try again.
01:15And just last year,
01:17Diane became a registered professional teacher.
01:21A true never-say-die, especially if you're still alive,
01:25do the things that others see as your weakness.
01:37And joining us today, from Lipa City, Batangas,
01:40Princess Diane Mendoza and her mother,
01:42Jenibel Mendoza, of course,
01:43with the interpreter,
01:45Ma'am Aimee Gabrielle Adiwa.
01:47Good morning and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
01:50Good morning!
01:52Good morning!
01:53And congratulations!
01:56That's great, we're very proud.
01:58You're my countrymen, Batangas.
02:00Yes, Batangas.
02:02So how do you feel, Ma'am Aimee,
02:06after Princess passed?
02:09What did you feel first?
02:11I'm very happy.
02:13And I can't believe that she achieved what she did,
02:21because for the third time, she passed.
02:25And finally, she became a teacher.
02:27Yes, she became a teacher.
02:29Alright, let's go to Teacher Diane.
02:31I might be confused.
02:33Alright, congratulations again, Diane.
02:36How does it feel that you are a teacher now,
02:39after trying three times,
02:42now that you are officially a teacher?
02:44How does it feel?
02:46I feel that I was inspired
02:50because I passed.
02:52And actually, before that,
02:54I had struggles in life.
02:56I had a lot of doubts
02:58because I said that I wanted to give up.
03:00But I really tried
03:02until I passed.
03:04And I believe in myself
03:06and I believe that God gave me a blessing.
03:10And also, I had confidence
03:12to try my best.
03:14I wonder, Teacher Diane,
03:16you said that you wanted to give up,
03:18but where do you get your strength?
03:20Who is your inspiration to continue
03:22your dream of becoming a teacher?
03:28Wow.
03:30My inspiration
03:32is that
03:34I think that
03:38Mother Mary
03:40and God
03:42and my family
03:44who supports me
03:46and no matter what happens,
03:48I will not give up.
03:50That's what they tell me.
03:52Keep going, even if you fell down at first.
03:54You know, I was touched
03:56because
03:58thank you to my grandmother.
04:00I am thankful to her.
04:02And I want to thank
04:04all of my teachers.
04:06And since elementary,
04:08high school, college,
04:10they really shaped
04:12my experience
04:14and also
04:16all of my teachers.
04:18Very inspiring.
04:20The positivity
04:22and strength.
04:24But I am also curious
04:26to Princess,
04:28is there a difference
04:30in the letters
04:32compared to
04:34the usual
04:36examinations?
04:38Is the exam
04:40CWD-friendly?
04:42What's your experience?
04:46To be honest,
04:48when I took the exam,
04:50actually, I was with the deaf.
04:52But I told
04:54them that
04:56I had a hard time with this exam
04:58because it's not for me.
05:00But it's challenging because
05:02the deaf
05:04like me, we can do it.
05:06We believe that we can
05:08because we are all equal.
05:10We all have an education.
05:12Very inclusive.
05:14And it provided
05:16equal opportunities for all.
05:18For the family of
05:20Teacher Diane,
05:22what was your
05:24support for her
05:26to achieve her goal?
05:28Her siblings
05:30always tell her
05:32not to give up
05:34because she will
05:36be depressed.
05:38Her siblings always tell her
05:40that she can do it.
05:42To be honest,
05:44every Wednesday
05:46at the dentist,
05:48we go to sleep early
05:50because I am with her.
05:52Then I saw her
05:54selling groceries.
05:56We told her
05:58that God won't let her down.
06:00We are here for her.
06:02You can do it. You are smart.
06:04God has a guide for you.
06:06You have a strong support system.
06:08How was her father's reaction?
06:10His father was very happy.
06:12He was very supportive.
06:14He would buy
06:16materials
06:18for her
06:20to support her
06:22even if it's expensive.
06:24He was very
06:26proud of his daughter.
06:28For sure. It's really
06:30all-out support.
06:32What is your message
06:34to the parents
06:36who are watching us now?
06:38To my parents
06:40who have children
06:42with their spouses,
06:44don't lose hope.
06:46Open your hearts.
06:48Show them that
06:50they are not different.
06:52Give your best for them.
06:54Above all,
06:56join in prayer
06:58so that we can overcome
07:00the trials
07:02that we are going through
07:04while we are taking care of them.
07:06Congratulations to you
07:08and to the whole family.
07:10I want to go back to Teacher Princess Diana.
07:12What are your plans now?
07:14You are now officially a teacher.
07:16How will you mentor
07:18students?
07:20What schools are you planning to teach?
07:22Push also for this advocacy
07:24that even if you have a disability,
07:26you can still reach for your dream.
07:32I want to teach
07:34deaf students
07:36like me
07:38because I believe
07:40that deaf people
07:42can do it.
07:46I believe
07:48that they will be empowered
07:50because in my experience,
07:52many people helped me
07:54so why can't I do the same
07:56for others?
07:58I want to inspire students.
08:00I want to break
08:02the barriers that they are going through.
08:08Breaking barriers.
08:10Thank you so much
08:12for your time.
08:14Your story is really inspiring.
08:16Once again,
08:18Princess Diana Mendoza,
08:20Mommy Jennable Mendoza,
08:22Mommy Gabriela Diwa.
08:24Thank you very much.
08:28Continue to be an inspiration, Princess Diana.
