00:00I, not being an Italian citizen, have to deal with these things.
00:06This is the residence permit.
00:15Having a residence permit means being a third-class citizen.
00:21I'm doing this film documentary, 18 Ius Soli, because I absolutely don't want to see Italians
00:26who walk around with a residence permit.
00:29This is my country.
00:31Being Italian is, first of all, being a citizen.
00:38I feel Italian, even though I don't have citizenship,
00:41because I've been here since I was three.
00:43So, if I don't feel Italian, what should I feel?
00:47The documentary is characterized by a dozen interviews I've done all over Italy
00:59with a lot of second-generation kids,
01:02all of whom, despite their age, don't have Italian citizenship.
01:09I asked to become Italian, even though I feel Italian.
01:18Would you like to be able to do like all your other classmates?
01:23Because you grew up with them, so you think you're one of them.
01:26But every now and then you always find an obstacle, that wall.
01:29One thing that marked me deeply, for example, when I was 18,
01:33I had to leave my fingerprints.
01:35It was a shocking experience.
01:38I think about it, and I say, we're at this level.
01:41You say, wow, I've been here since I was little, and look how much I've grown.
01:48If it's not a job, you can't renew your residence permit.
01:51On the other hand, if it's not a residence permit, you can't work.
01:56There are almost one million so-called second-generation kids in Italy,
02:00and they are a large cultural, artistic, scientific resource
02:05of human and creative capital for the industry and the country-Italy system.
02:10Thanks to the new generations, we won't have paid pensions,
02:14we'll have a country that can develop.
02:16Italy is at risk because it doesn't want to open up to these new horizons,
02:20so people move to where they feel most welcome.
02:24The concept of homeland, the concept of national identity,
02:29must be connected to the times we live in.
02:32We are in 2011, the world is ahead, it's a world of confrontation,
02:37it's a world of exchanges, a world where everyone has the same opportunities.
02:41A new law is needed.
02:43There are laws in the Parliament, we are discussing them,
02:45and we hope they will be approved.
02:47After you live in a country, and you're 26 years old,
02:53and you feel different, even if you grew up in the same country,
02:58it doesn't change anything.
03:01You will hear different stories about 18 Just Soli,
03:04which for me are crazy, but they are all stories of Italians.
03:09We also ask you for support,
03:11to add us and our Facebook page, 18 Just Soli,
03:17or to visit our website, www.just-soli.org.
